"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" | PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 18, 1999 - 3 Police vow to crack down on skateboard riders By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Durham Regional Police have vowed to crack down on skate- boarders who cause dis- turbances in Port Perry. Inspector Chuck Mercier of Port Perry's 26 Division said last week that officers here will enforce all laws in an effort to keep the streets safe for both motorists and pedestrians. The zero tolerance stance originates from a number of complaints made by home owners in the MacDonald/Rosa St. area near Port Perry High School, said Insp. Mercier. "We have had ongoing dangerous situations in that area over the last 12 months, except for win- ter," he said Friday. "We have had numer- ous complaints from both the residents and those who use the street. We've tried to defuse the issue by having positive dia- logue with the people in the area, but to no suc- cess," he said. "The youths use the street in an unsafe man- ner and that has increased hostility in the area. The police are here to enforce all the munici- pal, provincial and crimi- nal laws regarding skate- boarding and we will take a zero tolerance stance with any unlawful act." Other incidents in the area have included a skateboard being run over by a vehicle, and another skateboarder being nearly hit by a police cruiser. "It's clear the warnings they are being given are not heeded," said Insp. Mercier. "They are riding in unsafe environments. This is not an anti-skate- boarding issue, this is kids who are riding in high-traffic areas and who are disrupting cer- tain businesses." Durham Police are strong supporters of the construction of a skate- board park in the Port Perry area, said Insp. Mercier. "We support anything to encourage youth activi- ty here; skateboarding is a positive sport," he said. "We are not against skateboarding, this is just a safety issue." The move to enforce rules of the road and side- walk is an effort to pre- vent someone from get- ting hurt, he stressed: "Sooner or later someone is going to get hit or hurt and then everyone will become very concerned about all of this. We just want to eliminate that from happening." ~ OUR SEMI-ANNUAL -~ on selected Men', Womens, Childrens and Infants clothing and footwear womens kids shoes * Dockers * Guess? * Krickets * Keds * Brooks * Point Zero * Guess? * Fila * Levi's * Mac & Jac * Fila * Adidas * Gant * Mary Rose * Adidas * Raft River * Chaps * Brooks * Pickles * Naturalizer * Arrow * Tabi * Val & Mik * Aerosoles & more & more & more & more *of equal or lesser value **excludes Tommy Hilfiger, all bathing suits, lingerie & accessories, Stride Rite and Dexter Shoes ***see in store for complete details Sale Ends May 31 ' 1999. 3278 on f LACH IV[TT Io) Sl aloTa § aL Td VAC RR KT: Al oot KS BR@CK'S 168 Queen St, Port Perry 985-2521 Service, Quality and Style Since 188] yo BYTE) pw {el Kids 174 Queen St., Port Perry 985-8797
