The meeting -- which was held Saturday (May 1) at Goreski's Marine on Scugog Island -- attracted about 25 people. Bernie Villeneuve, Superintendent of the Waterways, along with Director of Canal Oper- ations Fred Alyea , and Wayne Harpell, Kirkland Officers back in court From Page 1 Hoskins were at the home to question Mr. Romagnuolo's oldest son, 20year-old Lorenzo, about alleged threats made to a York officer during a phone call. It is unclear what hap- pened next, but during a scuffle one police officer was shot in the face, Mr. Romagnuolo was fatally shot and a younger son, 17-year-old Rocco, was seriously wounded in the abdomen. Officers from the Durham Police Service and heavily armed Tactical Unit officers sealed off the court from the general public and York Regional Police Chief Julian Fantino was there to lend what he called "moral support to my officers and their fam- ilies." Terry Ryan, President of the Durham Regional Police Association, was also in the court. Mr. Ryan said in an interview earlier, "there is no doubt in the minds of the men and women of the Durham Regional Police Service that these officers acted in the prop- er manner and with the public's safety in mind." The widow of Tony Romagnuolo was in court with several family mem- bers, but refused com- 'ment. A family friend with Mrs. Romagnuolo said, "We are glad the process has begun, but we missed the first part of the hear- ing, that won't happen again." York Chief Fantino said that he too, intends to be present for his offi- cers court appearances. Durham officers at the court had no explanation for the absence of Durham Chief Kevin McAlpine. The Durham Chief was present at the Sector Supervisor, were on hand to discuss a number of topics concerning area residents. Major issues raised were how the staff runs the locks, water levels, and the placement of naviga- tional markers and | We Love Moms? and Moms love a gift from Brock's!! Dave Goodwin com- plained about Scugog let- ting water out when there's under two feet of water in the spillway. "When I got to Lindsay I thought it was a chance to hold water - instead the narrow channel had a rush of water, I almost bot- tomed out." Mr. Villeneuve said these decisions are judg- ment calls, and are based on other factors than just those which might affect boaters.
