The young parents -- they are aged 18 to 22 -- got the opportunity to take part in the beautifi- cation project through the North Durham Teen Parents group, formed here several years ago. Mr. Taylor said that while that group has been able to address a number of issues confronting its young clients, employ- ment has always been more difficult to tackle. "A lot of the needs of the young people have been met... but we've always been frustrated at not having an oppor- tunity to get them into an employment situa- - tion," said Mr. Taylor. He said in an interview that while the landscap- ing project -- it will target some park and lake front areas, as well as other spots in Port Perry -- is important, its goal is more far-reaching. "We're not out to train landscapers per se," he said. "We want to help people get employment." Larry Wickett, who's been hired as coordinator of the six-month project, concurs. He's hoping to build the confidence and skills necessary to seek and keep employment among the members of his crew. "The actual projects themselves, while impor- tant, are not the centre piece," he said. In addition to the $200 weekly stipend, the young poopie involved are eligible for a $500 bonus upon completion of the six-month pro- gram, said Cathy Twaites, of Human Resources Development Canada, which provided funding under its Youth Employment Strategy program. They can also receive another. $1,500 upon enrolling in-school, or landing a full-time job. Jason Wilson, a 21- year-old from Pefferlaw whose wife is expecting a baby any day, is excited about the project, and the opportunities it can provide him. He's been looking for quality full- time work, but so far has been unable to find any, he says. "These guys are going to give us experience, so it's a good opportunity," he said. He's looking forward to learning computer skills and gaining expe- rience with the tools and technology the landscap- ing work will require, because he'll need a job to support his new family. "A full-time job," said Mr. Wilson. "That's what I want to hear." Feel like golfing?
