So 10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 23, 1999 \ "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Lake restoration project topic of public meeting A public meeting to discuss the "Scugog Shores Millennium Project" will be held at 7 p.m. April 13 at the Scugog Community Centre on Reach The Scugog Shores Millennium Project was initiated in 1997 by a small group of Port Perry residents with an interest in habitat enhancement and ecosystem health in Lake Scugog and surrounding lands. The focus of the project is the south- west corner of Lake Scugog along the shoreline north of Hwy. 7A (the cause- way) and adjacent to Reid's supermar- ket. The site currently features a Class 1 wetland, is a popular fishing spot, and borders a public park. In spite of these attributes, the area Shoreline trail, spawning areas part of vision has become degraded over the years by trampling, dumping of refuse, a proliferation of exotic and "weedy" plants and the construction of concrete walls along the lakeshore and a stormwater channel. The site also presents a safety haz- ard due to parking and pedestrian traffic along the highway near the fishing : area. urposes of the project: Q To Te ance, restore and protect the site's ecology and biodiversity, "including fish, waterfowl and other fauna, diverse native plant species and soil and water quality; a To develop the site as an educa- tional and recreational amenity that will attract recreational anglers, tourists, local citizens and school groups 0 To encourage participation a coop- eration among local citizens, municipal, provincial and federal agencies, First Nations, schools, organizations and businesses. Along with these main goals, safety, wheelchair accessibility, minimal maintenance and vandal resistance are primary considerations in planning for the site. Proposed features and programs include: 0 A boardwalk and fishing pier. a Shoreline rehabilitation and natu- ralization. 0 A naturalized stormwater swale and/or pond system. a Enhancement and creation of fau- nal habitat. QA multi-purpose trail and seating areas. a A picnic shelter/outdoor classroom. a Interpretive and educational pro- grams. a Partnerships and public participa- tion. ao Naturalization of 100 private prop- erties along Lake Scugog. The project is expected to be imple- mented in three phases, with comple- tion scheduled for spring 2002.
