v "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 9, 1999 ? KFA launches walleye spawnin ---- Jeff Mitchell ort Perry Star Spawning beds are being built in several locations along the shore of Lake Scugog this winter in an effort to determine the best conditions for walleye reproduction. Members of the local chapter of the Kawartha Fisheries Association (KFA) are working in conjunction with Trent University on sites here and in nearby Pigeon and Balsam Lakes. They will build spawning beds consisting of varying sizes of rock and then monitoring spawning and hatch rates to determine which beds the pick- erel prefer. KFA chapter president Sandy Beaton said the infor- mation gathered will be valu- able in helping the ongoing reproduction of walleye, and introduced species in Scugog. The study will monitor both the number of eggs in each type of spawning bed -- they're installing beds using two dif- ferent sizes of rock -- and the hatch rate for each, said Rev. Beaton. Part of the KFA's mandate is to monitor species and the rate of success of their spawning 'each season. "We do walleye spawning monitoring anyway as part of our regular activities, but we'll pay real special attention to these sites," he said. A spawning bed was installed |. Friday morning at the northern tip of Scugog Island. KFA mem- bers were assisted by 18 stu- dents from Port Perry High School, most of whom are enrolled in Larry Doble's envi- ronmental studies class. They hauled loads of rock dumped on the shore by Van Camp Construction, putting different sizes of rock in designated areas. Other beds will be installed across the lake on the shore near Port Hoover, near Washburn Island, at another site north of Goreski's resort on Scugog Island, and in the Williams Point area. Funding for the effort comes through the Ministry of Natural Resource's Community Fisheries Involvement Program. In addition to Van Camp Construction, which is supplying the rock without pay- ment until the funding comes .through, the effort is being assisted by Yamaha, which is providing equipment to move the material. Rev. Beaton said it's impor- tant to determine which spawn- ing conditions walleye prefer in order to ensure the popular species' continued presence in the lake. While they'll lay their eggs virtually anywhere, rocky conditions are the best protec- tion from predators. "What we'd call suitable con- ditions oceupy only 4 per cent of the shoreline in Lake Scugog," said Rev. Beaton, adding that "up to half of that shoreline has been rendered ineffective by humans. "As you go along the shore- line, you can see where people unwittingly have put in fill, and they've destroyed a walleye spawning bed," he said. "So we're down to only 2 per cent being suitable for walleye spawning." He said the creation of spawning beds will prove bene- ficial to the species: "What we're doing is giving them a better chance at hatching." Construction of the spawning beds is Agri of an ambitious, $1.6 million restoration pro- posed for Lake Scugog and its shoreline by the KFA. Other efforts, unveiled in a presenta- tion to township council last month, will include construction of a shoreline trail, and a fishing and observation pier at the southerly end of the lake near Hwy. 7A. Several sources of funding are being sought for the project, which is viewed by the KFA as 'a means of ensuring the health of the lake, and the eco-tourism industry that depends on it. Plans will be discussed at a project on Scugog public meeting to be held April f= 13 at the Scugog Community Centre. Watch The Star for 'details on the meeting.
