od oo v 10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 9, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice " Blackstock hall, arena have rental time: committee By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Blackstock Recreation Complex is open for business. That's the message rec committee member Fred Ford wants to get across to the public. "I think some of the peo- ple have forgotten about us out in Blackstock," he said late last week. "If we were to promote ourselves a little better, I think the public would realize there is a great opportunity out there for them to take advantage of." With rental revenues yy in 1998, the commit- tee has decided to take a more pro- active approach 5 jo bring usiness Fred Ford to the arena and banquet hall. "People are always com- plaining about the shortage of ice time in Scugog but we have lots of good times available here," said Mr. Ford. Arena rates start at approximately $70 an hour for children and about $90 for adults. "If you want some ice time, all you have to do is call Vern Sutton, our man- ager. We can accommodate schools, we're not big enough for a Junior A or B game, but we can fit in pickup games, figure skating, and curling there," shift-workers, pick-up games... said Mr. Ford. "People want to build a second ice pad in Port Perry but why not use what you've already got first?" The Blackstock Rec Hall also has a number of dates Mr. Ford would like to see filled in the next few months. ~ The Rec Hall currently is used by area groups such as the Blackstock Lions' Club, a co-op daycare, karate and kick-boxing clubs, the Ministry of Agriculture, Cartwright High School and Cartwright Central Public School, general meetings on a regular basis and, of course, the annual Blackstock Fair in August. It is a non-smoking, air- conditioned facility which features a stage, complete kitchen, washroom and bar facilities, and has parking for more than 100 cars. Camping in the fair- grounds is also permitted for those wishing to spend the night, he said. "It's a very nice hall which is easily accessible for everyone and has all the upgrades of a modern facility with reasonable rates and flexible dates," said Mr. Ford. The Old Town Hall, near the rec centre, is also a great venue for small, per- sonal gatherings, he added. "It's a well-used place and for about $15 a night, well that's a good deal for THE POWER TO ALWAYS BE THERE. The push for business is not a cry for financial help though, says Mr. Ford. "We're not desperate for funds; I just think it's a shame that we're not being used when people really need ice time and they don't think of us. We have the same type of facilities you can find elsewhere," he said. Anyone wishing to book some time at the Rec Hall can call Wilma Van Camp at 986-4927 and ice time can be arranged by stop- ping by the arena and talk- ing with Vern Sutton. Also, anyone who is a Blackstock resident and wishes to provide a food or service to those visiting the community can call Mr. Ford at 986-0352 to be included on a list of ser- vice providers. with AG i | the office at 1- 905- 793 ; WE WISH TO DRAW YOUR ' ATTENTION TO THE FOLLOWING IN OUR CURRENT "T'WO WEEKS TO SAVE" FLYER.
