More than seven years after his first attempt to publish a series of math magazines, Port Perry's George Gadanidis is back in business. His latest project, Math Mania - Adventures in Mathematics, has been sent "to every school in Canada, and can also be found in Books Galore and More in Port Perry. The magazine is a lively, entertaining series of math problems and quizzes, aimed at specific topics. The key to the book's suc- cess is to make math fun again, says Mr. Gadanidis. "The book gives a differ- ent perspective on math; it links it to other things that make it interesting," said Mr. Gadanidis last week. "From elephants to sto- ries to solving silly prob- lems... with typical math you just do problems; with this the context is very unique," he said. "If you could interview a circle, what would you say? What do you think it would say? It's puzzles like this that give math a refreshing look. With quite an extensive history in the mathematics field, Mr. Gadanidis said beginning a math publica- tion was kind of a natural thing to do. "I just started publish- ing again; I did it about 10 years ago, and it lasted for three years before I stopped. I've published lots of books, but I like the math books... I like the reaction I get from the students." He plans to publish Math Mania four times a year -- in February, April, September and November -- and hopes that both par- ents and schools take advantage of his product. He has sent a copy of his Mackey & Bailey Barrister & Solicitor newest magazine to 7,500 schools across Canada. The book is created on computer at his Whitfield Rd. home and edited by his wife, Janette, before being sent for publication in Oshawa. "There are not a lot of books out there like this, ones that put math in a novel perspective. This is just fun for me, sort of a part-time job, said Mr. Gadanidis. "This is something I do in my spare time and it's something I want to do to help kids." Currently employed as the math facilitator for the Durham District School Board, Mr. Gadanidis has spent time in the past as a math professor at Western University and has also lent a hand in running the Math Day programs at Canada's Wonderland.
