LETTERS Blame province for latest strikes To the Editor: In view of the present labour dispute and strike in the Toronto School Board, I feel that it is necessary to point out that the real culprit in these failed negotiations is the Ontario gov- ernment. Through the funding formula for public education of this government, support staff within schools are not seen as being important. Those people who are the skeleton on which the school infrastructure relies and those who provide special services to special students are looking to bear a huge portion of the hundreds of millions of dollars cut from board budgets. In statistics obtained from Statistics Canada and the American database "Common Core of Data", a data base maintained by the United States Department of Education, Ontario has dropped from a high of 13th of 63 educational jurisdictions (i.e. provinces and states) in 1991- 92 to 55th, in per pupil spending on public education in 1997-98. Gord Humphrey, Port Perry To the Editor: This is an invitation to all former students, staff and support staff of Pelham (District) High School, Fenwick, Ontario to gather for our fourth reunion. PHOTO COURTESY PAT LOVE by Jeff Mitchell ONE FROM COLUMN A, AND... I've tried a number of topics for this week's column, but none of them has really captured my imagination, you know what | mean? | So far I've written a few jokes about Joe Clark, wondered why cats stick their heads in the shoes of visitors, and pondered the impending arrival of spring, but none of these topics has been sustainable. How much can you write about cats sticking their heads in the shoes of strangers? Who really cares about the weather? Hasn't Joe Clark been made fun of enough? So | decided that since I'm feeling kind of scattered, the best idea might be a multiple choice column. Just choose one from each subheading, and enjoy your own column. It could be sort of like a buffet. Maybe we can do it once a month. Maybe not. Here goes. THE THING ABOUT: a) cats sticking their heads in your shoes b) falling down on the ice c) getting arrested for leaving the house without pants IS THAT: a) you knew it would happen sooner or later b) it sure is funny when it happens to other people c) it's unlikely there'll be permanent damage SO YOU MIGHT AS WELL: a) say what the heck, and make a game of it b) make sure you don't take your shoes off Cc) keep a good lawyer on retainer BECAUSE YOU JUST KNOW THAT: a) everyone will be looking when it happens b) somebody won't find it quite as funny as you will c) it will be captured by someone with a video camera AND THERE'S ALWAYS THE POSSIBILITY THAT: a) it's caused by fleas b) you'll become a laughing stock c) your wife and children will leave you UNLESS, OF COURSE: a) fire breaks out b) war breaks out Cc) everybody already that about you knew anyway BESIDES, LIFE IS: a) too short to worry about things like that b) just a carnival c) a cruel joke played on you by a vindictive God ..Say, that was fun, huh? And it's given me a lot of great ideas for future novelty columns... NEXT WEEK: SCRATCH & SNIFF!
