This continues to be the line of thinking at LATLOM Associates Inc. Driver Training Centre located at the Latcham Centre Wednesday and Thursday evenings, 6 - 9:10 p.m,, in Port Perry. According to the dictionary: ac-ci-dent is anything occurring without a known or assignable cause. Reading the newspaper reportings of "accidents", there is usually an assignable cause. Intersections are the second highest areas of crashes so it makes sense you should never approach the second highest area of a possible crash without doing something to protect yourself. Scanning LCR (Left, Centre and Right) will greatly reduce your chance of having a crash. Left - because, as you are approaching the intersection, that's who will hit you first. Centre - to see if someone is close enough to make a left turn suddenly in front of you and Right - because that's who will hit you last. What stops vehicles? Lights? - No! Stop Signs? - Nol... People stop vehicles and they don't always stop. Consider this. It's no "accident" if you are in a collision - you helped the other person put you there by not doing something to protect yourself. It's your fault, too. Even if you have the right of way, what good is it going to do you after the crash to say, "well I had the right of way" and be sitting in a wheelchair the rest of your life. A lot of people who had the right of way are also dead. ~ -17th century philosopher Voltaire When a crash happens at an intersection the cause is usually someone went through a light or stop sign - therefore, it's not an "accident" - it's a collision. Two people caused that collision. The one who didn't yield the right of way and the one who did nothing to protect themselves when approaching a highly prone crash area. Established in 1996 with an Open House at the Latcham Centre, this event included Joel Aldred, DFC, as Master of Ceremonies, along with members from the Ontario Safety League and Doug Cowan, a co-editor of "Roadworthy", the Ministry of Transportation's book the course is based on. Other invited guests were Jesse James from Citizens for Responsible Driving, Joan Quail, a teacher from PPHS and Port Against Drunk Drivers and Jerry Taylor of Taylor Insurance who gave an interesting talk on vehicle insurance. The driver training centre is operated by Marilyn June French who has been training new drivers, mostly young people in Uxbridge, Port Perry, Oshawa and surrounding areas, since 1991. Defensive driving is a basic daily life skill everyone needs to know how to do every day of his or her life. Helping new drivers learn how to drive is extremely worthwhile and rewarding.
