PORT PERRY STAR PORTS GATHERING: A group of players from both the Taylor Ford-Mercury team and the Harrison Fuels squad gathered around the net last Sunday in search of the puck. Throughout their SHL playoff JEFF MITCHELL / PORT PERRY STAR tilt the two sides were quite competitive, but the Taylor team came out on top of the match with a 2-1 score. Playoff action continues this Sunday. 'Game over for Port Perry ModJacks end their 1998-99 season with two straight wins over the Merchants, Bullets By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star Port Perry MoJacks' head coach Tom Thornbury says he would do a few things differently if he had the chance to start the hockey season over again. "We have a better team than (our) fifth place finish," he said Sunday night after the MoJacks played their final game of the season, missing the playoffs for the second time in three years. Thornbury, in his first year as a Jr. C head coach, pointed the finger at himself when asked what went wrong this year. Specifically, he noted that the ModJacks got off to a poor start last fall, going 2-7-1 in their first ten games. "The start is a crucial part of the season," he explained, adding that he should have started to use his top players more often to go after wins, rather than trying to spread the ice time around to give himself a chance to judge what the players were capa- ble of doing on the ice. "] used those first eight or ten games to judge the players instead of going with the best to got those On Feb. 6 Campkins added another win to their list when they faced off with Browmans. Andrew Hill got the first two goals of the game to put Campkins ahead. His goals were assisted by Mike Jehu, Matt Menear and Alex DeJong. The next two goals were both by David Storer. His first goal was unassisted and his second goal was assisted by Kyle Wiiskenen which made the score two all. Chris Isaacs came up with a goal assisted by Matt Menear and Andrew Hill, but Mark Shinkel quickly answered back assisted by en Furquhar and tied it at three. Victory over Browmans puts Campkins at top of Peewee standings The third period had six goals, three of these goals were by Josh Haye for his second hat trick of the year and Chris Isaacs added one more. The rest of Campkins assists were by Andrew Hill again, to give him six points, Matt Menear came up with the last assist. Browmans last two goals were scored by David Storer assisted by Chris Jackson, Justin Cottrell and his brother Jason Cottrell. The next Peewee house league games are on Feb. 20 as Joe's plays Lions at 10:45 a.m., Shoppers vs Campkins at 11:50 a.m. and Emmersons vs Browmans at 1 p.m. wins -- that was my responsibility," he said in the dressing room after the MoJacks had downed the last place Bobcaygeon Bullets 8-3 to end the 1998-99 season Sunday night at the Scugog Arena. The MoJacks managed to cobble together two straight wins to finish off the season as they nipped the Little Britain Merchants 5-4 in OT in a make-up game played last Wednesday night in Port Perry. But their playoff hopes had been dashed before that, and the team essentially was playing for pride the last two times out. While Thornbury was prepared to shoulder the lion's share of responsi- bility for the season, he also noted that suspensions at key times hurt as well -- specifically a multi-player scrap in a 6-5 overtime loss to Lakefield on Jan. 17 that resulted in four key players getting two-game suspensions. Those next two games were against the Georgina Ice, a team the ModJacks were chasing for the final playoff berth. They lost both of them by scores of 9-3 and 6-2 and that all but finished any hope the team had for post-season action. To be fair to the players involved in that Lakefield scrap, the Chiefs had an extra man on the ice at the time and the MoJack players were sticking up for each other. While Thornbury expressed his disappointment at the outcome of the season, he said he's definitely looking forward to returning to the ModJack bench next season. A formal decision by the Club has not yet been made on his future, but it's expected the Woodville native will be asked to return. K.C.I. Gas Bar 4 Taylor Fuels 4 This was a close game and K.C.I. Gas Bar and Taylor Fuels were not able to solve anything as they finished in a 4-4 tie.
