"A Family Tradition for 133 Years" Scugog set to host events for Summer Games From page 1 last Thursday. "We were very opti- mistic, though," she added. "We worked very hard." Durham's bid is unique in that it proposes to share the numerous events that comprise the games among the region's eight municipalities, said Mrs. Robinson. Scugog is is line to host rowing, waterskiing, canoeing, lawn bowling and beach volleyball. "We had to look at the whole region," said Mrs. 'Robinson, who works in 'the township's clerk's department. "The big bonus point is that we're all going to be working together." She said that as the bid was formed, the com- mittee kept in mind that all parts of the region would be hosting events. Neighbouring Uxbridge will be the site of lawn bowling, beach volleyball and womens' soccer events, and Brock will host womens' rugby and mens' softball. The games run Aug. 11 to 13. "An important aspect for us when we were divid- ing up the sports was to: make sure the northern municipalities had a good crack at some sports," said Mrs. Robinson. The watersports events will be taking place on Lake Scugog, with the municipal boat launch as the centre of operations on shore. The area was recently dredged, and the local rowing club recently built a new storage build- ing for shells. Spectators will be able to gather on the shores of Lake Scugog to watch events, said Mrs. Robinson. And beach vol- leyball will take place in Palmer Park -- all that's needed is a few truckloads of sand. Lawn bowling, meanwhile, will take place at the existing club on Old Simcoe Rd. The support of local groups such as the lawn bowling and rowing orga- nizations has been an important part of assem- bling the successful bid, said Mrs. Robinson. "We've had nothing but positive feedback from all the people here," she said. "They've been just terrif- ic." Now that the bid has been accepted, local orga- nization begins in earnest. A number of subcom- mittees -- covering every- thing from financing to transportation for ath- letes to orchestrating the opening ceremonies in Oshawa -- will be formed, with the view to being ready for the event in a year and a half. Regional representa- tives were elated when news of the successful bid was announced at a regional council meeting last Wednesday. Durham edged out Timmins and St. Catharines. New scale in place at waste site Durham Region has installed a new weigh scale system at its waste management facility in Blackstock. All customers are now required to drive over the scale upon entering the site and then again prior to leaving. Depending on the amount of waste delivered for disposal, charges may apply. Waste disposal rates remain unchanged. "This new weigh scale system will pro- vide the region with an accurate method of determining. the amount of waste being delivered by each cus- tomer and this, In turn, will ensure that any waste disposal charges are calculated uniformly," says Peter Watson, Manager of Waste Management for the Region.
