2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 19, 1999 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" They'll seek community input on the issue Trustees debate year-round schools By Rik Davie Special to the Star New schools built in Durham Region will be con- structed with year-round schooling in mind. As plans for several new schools were presented at last Monday night's meeting, trustees had some last minute questions about the added cost of equip- ping the buildings for year-round use and future additions. Superintendent Jack Massie, who oversees con- struction for the board, said that the new schools will have ductwork installed that allows for the addition of air conditioning units, should the schools ever opt for a modified school year that includes classes in the summer. A modified school calendar -- which would see students with the same amount of holiday time as the current schedule, but spread over the calendar year -- is currently in effect at C.E. Broughton Secondary School with much success, said Uxbridge/ Brock Trustee, Nancy Lorraine. Ms Lorraine put forth a motion to set up commit- tees in the yet-to-be-built school areas, aimed at informing parents in the community of possible benefits to a modified school calendar. "It would give school communities a chance to see the option of a modified year, and explain the benefits fully to them," she said. Trustee Brian Clarke opposed the motion. "I don't think this should be forced on people in this way," he said. "I would rather see it done another way," said Me, Clark, "although I have no suggestion as to ow." Scugog trustee Bobbie Drew agreed with the motion, provided that support from the school com- munity is the deciding factor. "We've been down this road before with modified calendars and as long as the wishes of the community are foremost, then it is certainly worth looking into," she said. The motion to set up committees composed of parents, staff, board staff and others interested, to examine results at C.E. Broughton -- where enroll- ment for the modified year is on a steady rise. --was taken to a recorded vote. The motion passed 6-3. Board Chair Doug Ross, who supported the move, told fellow trustees not too read to much into the motion. "The intent of this motion is only to give the kids and the community the opportunity to look at this option," he said. "No one is saying that a modified school year is in the works for new schools."
