Penny Pettypiece, 43, of Scugog Island, was transported to Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre in Toronto after the accident, which occurred. on Brock Rd. south of Taunton in Pickering Thursday (Jan. 7), said Durham Regional Police. Police said Mrs. Pettypiece was northbound on Brock in her 1991 Mercury Sable when she lost control of the car. It crossed the centre line, into the path of an oncoming 1997 Chev van, being driven by 44-year- old Eric Smith of Pickering, said police. Mrs. Pettypiece was taken first to hospital in Ajax, and later transported to Sunnybrook by ambulance. She sustained serious injuries in the acci- dent. Mr. Peters was also taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the crash. Police attribute the accident to poor road and weather conditions. High winds whipped fallen snow throughout the day, and there were dangerous icy patches on roads throughout the region. Another treacherous spot was In the southwestern corner of Scugog Township, where a number of mishaps occurred on Durham Rd. 23. Accidents included a school bus that left # 23, and later in the day an ambulance skidding off the 7th Concession near Chalk Lake Rd. An ambulance attendant was slightly injured in that accident. Mrs. Pettypiece has lived on Scugog Island for several years. A nurse, she and a partner recently started a foot care service called Feeling Fine Feet. Police continue to investigate the accident.
