"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 22, 1998 - 5 Caesarea residents fed up with vandals By Chris Hall Port Perry Star A number of home owners near Caesarea have had it with young van- dals they say terrorizing their neigh- bourhood. A group of teens continues to smash mailboxes, steal from homes, light fires, and verbally abuse homeowners on Scugog Point Rd., says area resident Howard Cayer. The trouble has been ongoing for close to a year, and he says it's got to stop now. "It's been going on all year... it never stops. There's not one night that goes by and a mailbox is not pulled out or smashed," he said in a recent interview. Mr. Cayer said he knows who all the culprits are and where they live, but attempts to talk to their parents and even calling Durham Police have produced no results. "There's nothing being done about it. We've (homeowners) met, and all the parents say their kids couldn't do anything like that because they're all angels; that's a lie," he said with a laugh. "We call the cops, they come and if they see the kids, they talk to them. Then they tell us there's nothing they can do because they're too young (to be severely punished by a court), or that there's no proof. The cops tell us to buy a video camera and tape it," said Mr. Cayer. "We just want it to stop. Every god- damn night... it never stops. It happens as soon as it gets dark and somebody's going to get hurt. They're stealing and breaking things, scaring people and lighting huge fires in the back woods." Semi-retired from the trucking business, Mr. Cayer says he and his wife moved out of Pickering to avoid this kind of disruptive behaviour. Residents are thoroughly fed up, said Mr. Cayer. "The kids are ripping down Christmas lights and decorations, breaking windows, stealing, destroy- ing (Toronto) Sun community boxes... it's got to change." Sgt. Ken Hudson, an officer with Port Perry's Durham Regional Police 26 Division station, agreed that there is a problem with youths in the area. "We've got the complaints and we've been there, but not much can really be done," he said. "We've circulated flyers telling people to watch out for their neighbours' homes, and we've had some patrol cars there. "We can't start arresting kids because people have a problem with them running around the streets there." Howard Cayer says vandals are 'making life miserable for him and his neighbours in the Scugog Point area. He says the neighbourhood is a nightly target for trouble makers, who damage mail boxes, steal from homes, and light fires.
