2- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 22, 1998 CHRISTMAS GREETINGS 1998 The Smallest Elf: A Christmas Story By Katie Zaparanuik Gr. 4, Immaculate Conception School On December 24 everyone was very busy at the North Pole, except the smallest elf Curdy. He wanted to help but when he tried, something would always go wrong. When he tried to help Randy and Sandy put the star on the top of the tree it fell down. Nobody wanted Curdy to help. Curdy felt left out. Mrs. Claus was baking Christmas cookies for the sleighride that night. Curdy went to see what the other elves were doing. Some were making toys, wrapping presents and putting them into Santa's sack. Curdy asked Tom if he could help, Tom said no, so Curdy went to the next room where some of the other elves were washing the rein- deer. Curdy asked Stretch if he could help, Stretch said no, Curdy went to the kitchen where the rest of the elves were making gingerbread houses. Curdy asked Shorty if he could help, Shorty said no! Curdy went to see Santa and told him no one wants me to help them. "Well we will have to change that right Curdy," said Santa. "¥es Santa we will" said Curdy. "I've got an idea" said Santa. "What is it, what is it" Curdy asked impatiently. Please tell me! Not yet you will find out soon, Santa said. Curdy went to tell Mrs. Claus that Santa had an idea to make the elves like him. BHI, PONTIAC BUICK LIMITED 10 Vanedward Drive, Port Perry 985-8474 elves had gathered in the kitchen to ask each other if Curdy had asked them if he could help them with their jobs. They all said yes. Stretch said maybe they should let Curdy help them. One elf said "No he'll ruin everything." "Yeah" said anoth- er elf and before you knew it all the elves were saying he'll ruin everything. Stretch said ok it was just a suggestion. Just then over the P.A. System they heard Santa say, "If you would like to help me deliver presents to night please come to my office now." Everybody rushed out of the kitchen. Curdy was first in line, Shorty was last in line. Sign your name on a piece of paper please. About a half an hour later Santa came back on the P.A. System again "Attention all elves, this years winner is Curdy," Santa announced. Santa was this you're idea! Yes it was. "Oh Santa thank- you" said Curdy. "You are wel- come Curdy! At around 5:30 pm Mrs. Claus made a nice hearty din- ner. She had also made Curdy a new pair of longjohns. Santa and Curdy left the North Pole at 6:00. As they left they both shouted, Now Rudolph, Now Dasher, Now Dancer, Now Prancer, On Comet, On Vixen, On Cupid, On Doner and Blitzen. While the rest of the elves waved bye. Curdy said thank-you for picking me. Santa said, "No problem. I hope they will learn to give others a chance to try no mat- ter what size you are." Doug Moffatt, Mayor Township of Scugog |
