_ - "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 15, 1998 - 3 GO bus a 'use it or lose it' service, says official By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Scugog residents will have to make good use of the new GO Bus service next year or risk losing it, officials told council last week. While there has been a positive response to the implementation of GO Bus service in Port Perry -- scheduled to begin Jan. 2 - - Al Robinson, director of bus services for GO Transit, told Scugog Council last Monday (Dec. 7) that he will be required to report back to the GO Transit Committee every six months to prove the new Beaverton to Whitby run 1s a viable and well-used route. "It will be a case of use it or lose it," he told council. GO buses -- which will make seven trips each week day, and five on Saturdays and Sundays -- will travel south along Hwy. 12. They will pick up passengers in Sunderland, Greenbank, Port Perry and Brooklin before stopping at Whitby's GO train station. Riders along the route will also be able to flag down GO buses along the way for pickups, added Mr. Robinson. The GO Transit Committee has agreed to spend $1.1 million on the Durham service, and is looking to recoup as much as 64 per cent of that in ticket sales. "We are here to serve the community... we don't expect to make money with this service. If we expected to fully recover our costs we'd never be here," said Mr. Robinson. "It's going to take a while for things to get going but after six or 12 months, and we have only one or two riders, we have a problem. We hope when we get the service here the people of Scugog can justify its use." While the province has Generator stolen Durham Regional Police were called to a Blackstock address after thieves stole a Honda generator valued at more than $2,000. Sometime between 1 a.m. and 6 am., thieves entered the front porch of a Church St. home through a door and stole the generator, which was under a blanket. DAVID M. The trip to Union Station should take one hour and 20 minutes, said Mr. Robinson. Last minute shopping ideas... CD Cases 178 Queen St, Port Perry 985-8334 %l¢ During a discussion period with council mem- bers, Mr. Robinson threw out a couple of suggestions for parking which were met with comments from local councillors. While GO officials looked at the corner of Old Simcoe Rd. and Reach Rd. as well as Curts Rd. (the short access road directly north of Tim Horton's and Wendy's) as pickup and drop-off spots in Port, Mayor Doug Moffatt point- ed out that easier places maneuvering for GO buses might be the Scugog Community Centre and the parking lot for the lakefront ball diamonds on Water St. Mayor Moffatt said GO officials should consider sending their buses further south on Simcoe St. to Shirley Rd., where riders can park at the region's commuter lot. The buses could then continue south on Simcoe and cut across to Ashburn before heading back to Highway 12 and to Brooklin and Whitby, the mayor said.
