"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 1, 1998 - 3 visit for bank holiday drive 'Pyramid schemes' Durham Police are warning area residents to be on the lookout for pyra- mid schemes that may be arriving in their mailbox- es. Sgt. Ken Hudson, an officer with Port's 26 Division, reports that a number of scams have shown up in mailboxes in Brock Township. Police are reminding people not to be fooled. Those receiving the let- ters are asked to send $5 to a Winnipeg address and wait patiently for a $50,000 payoff. "The recipient is instructed to send $5 in a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Winnipeg in return for a potential $50,000," said Sgt. Hudson. They are asked to mail their money to CM Marketing, Suite 244 35- 2855 Pembina Highway, Winnipeg, Manitoba, he said. + "There's nothing we can do," Sgt. Hudson said when asked if police are planning any action. "It's mostly a buyer-beware thing with us; we can't stop them or the resi- dents. "If people are foolish enough to send $5 to the address... you have to remember if it sounds to good to be true it probably 1s."
