"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 1, 1998 - 23 Sr ISO) LYNN SI OI EIES MSY VAY ORTS ModJacks host rival Uxbridge Sunday night From Page 21 feet out after being left on his skates, when he should have been on his back- side. After showing plenty of hustle and determina- tion through 50 minutes, the ModJacks looked tired and dis-organized in the final ten. SLAPSHOTS: To be fair, the team was without three regulars -- Tom Chambers, Matt Glen and Ryan Odette. Jeff Clarke, Rob Murphy, Greg Blackburn and Mike Heasman shoul- dered almost the entire load along the blue line, and that's a tall order against a quick team like Little Britain which has an abundance of fine skaters. Clarke, who has plenty of offensive skills, make several of his patented dashes with the puck deep into Merchant territory. They often result in a scoring chance but add a lot more miles to the captain's game. Glen and Chambers are both out with shoulder problems. Glen is expected back in the not-too-distant future but for Chambers it's a different story. He's out for several more weeks, perhaps until the end of the regular sched- ule. Those are big boots to fill. For this line-up to be successful, it needs 100 per cent effort from every player on every shift. This has not been the case in recent games as the team has just three points in its last six outings. Heading into the important month of December, the ModJacks' record shows the incon- sistency of the past eight weeks -- nine losses, six wins and three draws for 15 points. They have scored 57 goals, but sur- rendered 80 in those 18 games. Clearly, they would be in far better shape if those numbers were reversed. How can one explain lopsided losses of 8-5, 9-1, 8-1; but they have blanked first place Uxbridge 3-0 and drubbed the Merchants by a score of 10-3? Even with a few days off over Christmas they have 10 games, including three in three nights Dec. 18th, 19th and 20th. It's fair to say that this team needs to come out of December with a winning record if there is hope to be around for the post-season dance which starts the second week in February. Presently, the MoJacks trail the Merchants by one and third place Georgina by five points. They see action twice this week, starting tonight (Dee. 1) against the Chiefs in Lakefield. Even though the final score was 5-1 for Mariposa, the guys put forth a good effort. Mark Lott played an outstand- ing game in net making some great saves. In the first period Matt Smart, Glen Thompson, Luke Pilkey and Mike Thompson all had break- aways on the Mariposa net but failed to get it by their goalie. Shortly into the second period Glen Thompson scored our only goal.
