As part of allocations under the Community Policing Partnerships program, the province announced last week that 1,000 new front-line officers will be hitting the streets in Ontario. A total of 42 new recruits will be hired by Durham Regional Police, including two for north Durham's 26 Division. A request for the pair of officers was made in October of this year and granted, says 26 Division Inspector Chuck Mercier. » "We were given two extra persons for North Durham, and we already have one of them working here now," he said, referring to recruit Doug Henderson, who will begin attending the Ontario Police College (OPC) on Jan. 4. "And, depending on the budget process, hiring, and train- ing, we.should have another new officer in 1999. Mercier. Officers in training attend the OPC for 11 weeks before riding with a coach officer for three months, he explained. "It could take up to two years for them to complete their initial training; they're constantly in a learning environment, going over new things," said Insp. Mercier, adding that the new constables will be on probation for 18 months. The addition of two new officers will allow some flexibility within the North Durham station. "We're going to be able to do some things we haven't been able to do," he said. "A lot of police work and initiatives have been put on hold. "We want to work closer with the high schools, take care of some community-based ideas and other divisional problems we haven't been able to attend to with our manpower shortage. "Officers get injured, take leave, or are assigned to other | areas and that makes it quite a juggling act for us sometimes. | With more officers we can still do proper day-to-day patrols as well as the other things."
