10- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 17, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Church launches campaign to help hurricane victims By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star When appeals were made to help the stricken people in Central America, countries around the world rallied to help. Locally, the people in and around the communities of Epsom and Utica are pitching in to help, too. Hurricane Mitch, one of the deadliest hurricanes in recorded history, recently devastated Central America. More then 18,000 people were killed and hun- dreds of thousands kets, clothing and food, the committee felt it was better to send money. "What they really need is money," Rev. McKay said. "These poor people will need money to help pay for medical supplies, emergency food and the basic tools to survive: machetes, axes, hoes, shovels and seeds for planting. We will be helping these people rebuild their homes and lives." Helping the less fortunate in Third World countries isn't something new for the two hamlets. "Half a dozen people immediately volunteered," Rev. McKay said. "We decided to conduct a door-to- door canvass to everyone in and around the Epsom/Utica areas, rather than Just ask for help from the congregation," he said. : "We feel so fortunate to live in such a caring community," Gail Kerry, a mem- ber of the committee said at a meeting held at her home on the weekend. "When trouble strikes, our friends and neigh- bours are there to help us." Rather than have people donate blan- endeavours, the two villages have helped to feed malnour- ished people around the world. Just last month their harvest yielded more than $14,000, which was distribut- ed by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank to help feed the millions of starving people in Third World countries. Canvassers may be coming to your door soon. Any donation is appreciated and will be forwarded to an international relief agency working in Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala. Cheques should be made payable to the Epsom-Utica United Church and mailed to Janet Lehman, Treasurer, 16359 Marsh Hill Road, R. R. 4, Uxbridge LOP 1RA4. HEATHER McCRAE/PORT PERRY STAR A door-to-door canvass of homes in and around the villages of Epsom and Utica will be held this weekend and next in an effort to raise funds for victims of Hurricane Mitch, Rev. Bill McKay (middle), Don Asling and Gail Kerry are three members of the fundraising committee, formed by the congregation at Epsom/Utica United Church. The money will be used to help thousands rebuild their homes and their lives. CHIMNEY REPAIR * REBUILDING * LINERS * NEW CHIMNEYS W.E.T.T.
