"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, November 3, 1998 - 15 Operating from Brock House New program for Alzheimer patients unveiled Families in North Durham coping with the challenges of Alzheimer dis. ease and related dementias will find it a little easier as of this week. In order to meet the needs of North Durham residents, the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region will be in Sunderland two afternoons a month beginning Nov. 2. Brock House, a Retirement Home in Sunderland has agreed to provide space for an Alzheimer Society staff member and a local volunteer to be available to caregivers and others requiring information and support about the disease and related demen- tias. Kim Lepine, the Family Support Services Coordinator of the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region and Elaine Stevenson will be available the first and third Monday afternoons of each month from 1 to 4 p.m. Currently, in the north, the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region offers a support group for caregivers in Uxbridge the last Tuesday of each month at Trinity United Church. However, in a survey which was sent out this past spring to caregivers and professionals, dealing with per- sons with Alzheimer disease and their families, respondents were emphatic that a greater presence was needed in the northern part of the region. Caregivers wanted to have more and easier local access to support and to information. Kim and Elaine's pres- ence is a direct result of that request. Although, this is a six month pilot project, the Alzheimer Society is com- mitted to increasing access to its ser- vices. Sufficient use of the location will result in a permanent service. As part of increasing service, the Alzheimer Society will also be pre- senting a three week Caregivers Information Series Nov. 3, 10 and 17 at Brock House, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Topics will include community resources, transportation services and caregiving for a loved one. Speakers from Durham Access to Care, Brock Community Care, COPE, Handi Transit, North Durham Hospice and the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region will be participating. The Alzheimer Society has also implemented a portable lending library of books, videos and informa- tion which is now available at Brock and Uxbridge Community Care offices in Cannington and Uxbridge. There are estimated to be 3,000 families dealing with Alzheimer dis- ease and related dementias in Durham Region. By 2021, that number will have tripled. Alzheimer disease is a progressive, degenerative brain disorder which causes a gradual breakdown in the nerve cells of the brain and results in impaired memory, thinking and behaviour. At present it is not known what causes the disease or how to stop its progression. Although the Alzheimer Society of Durham Region office is located in the Oshawa Centre in Oshawa, its services are regional.
