-----y "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" 14- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 29, 1998 Environment ministry looking at Blackstock-area property From page 1 Police 26 Division in Port Perry said officers found what appears to be ille- gally dumped material on the property when they executed search warrants as part of the OPP-led Project Digger in July. They were also alarmed to find barrels containing an unidentified substance on the site, he said. "There's a whack of con- struction material," said Sgt. Ewles. "And when our investigators were In there, (they found) there's some barrels and stuff in there too." "The materials and bar- rels found on the premises caused us to contact the Ministry of the Environment." Although the waste material was found this summer, the property wasn't examined until last Wednesday (Sept. 23). The delay came about because representatives of the var- ious police forces involved in the theft investigation assumed others had made contact with the ministry, said Sgt. Kwles. Rob Lyon, a senior envi- ronmental officer with the MOE, made a preliminary inspection of the site last week. "I've been there, and have referred it to the investigation and enforce- ment branch," he said Thursday. "There are issues related to waste." to discuss the nature of the waste on site, or pro- vide further details on what he found there. He confirmed a creek runs through a portion of the property, but said, "I don't know how much oft a con- cern that 1s." The case has been Mr. Lyon was reluctant turned over to ministry investigators, who will now visit the site and determine whether to pur- sue charges, said ak official Bill Kozak. After visit to the site, inve ly tors will determine what priority the Cartwright site will be given. The case was referred to his office just last week. said Mr. Kozak, "so we're just getting started." He confirmed that at REE Te = least part of the waste on : : site appears to be refuse from construction sites. Sa 3 y Sgt. Ewles said the vol : X ume of material on site has led police here to believe the waste came from more than one source.
