"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 22, 1998 - 3 Bizarre display left at high school picket site As the sun broke over the horizon Monday morning it became apparent that tensions have escalated in Port Perry during the month-long high school teachers' strike. A macabre scene repulsed both neighbors and custodians of the local high school as the early morning light settled on the south lawn of the school. Cradled between a cluster of trees, in full view of the street, was a large sign flanked by three dead raccoons hanging from the branches, and a woven basket containing a dead skunk. The sign, printed in large red and black letters read: ON STRIKE R.I.P STUDENTS. A small handwritten note inside the basket read: "To whom it may concern, No animals were harmed for making this scene. Luv Bert!" There was also a sketch of a hang- man's noose on the card. A custodian from the school who arrived on the scene early went to work immediately to shield the ugly scene from the street and the daycare facility across the street. Both he and police representatives were repulsed at the sight. A neighbor reported he heard voices, which sounded like both male and female teens about 2:30 a.m. Monday morning outside his house, which is situated just south of the school. The investigating officer for the Durham Regional Police said the call about the incident came in at 7:05 a.m. from a neighbor. The Star was also contacted by a number of area resi- dents. Three arrested after truck broken into Three girls found themselves in Port Perry's 26 Division police station last week after they were caught break- ing into a truck. Durham Police report that one 13- year-old and two 14-year-old girls, all from Port Perry, were arrested last Wednesday (Sept. 16) afternoon when a passerby saw them crawl out of a truck that was parked at the local Legion. Police say the man noticed the three girls get out of the truck around 12:30 p.m. and then flee to a Bay St. address. Upon being notified, officers attend- ed the residence, questioned the youths, and arrested them. After a closer inspection, it was dis- covered that nothing was stolen from the vehicle and that the girls had forced open thebox cover and climbed inside. The girls' parents were called and the girls were later cautioned and released.
