| 18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, September 1, 1998 "Scugog"s Community Newspaper of Choice" Township contributes $60,000 to project Soccer group pitches ambitious plan for fields By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star The Scugog Soccer Association will start work this month to expand and improve the condition of the fields where close to 1,000 players from 4 to 40 enjoy a sport that is growing in popularity every year. The township Parks and Recreation committee agreed Monday morning to a request from the association for $60,000 ($20,000 per year over the next three years). This money will be added to $30,000 contributed by the soccer asso- ciation for a total of $90,000. Fields will be levelled The money will be used to flatten existing fields to improve them for play- eing and make them safer for players, and to add a new field to the north of the existing fields. That pitch will replace a western field that will be taken over by Durham Region as a buffer between the soccer fields and the regional sewage treatment lagoons fur- ther to the west. In a written proposal presented to the parks and rec committee Monday morning, soccer association president Ray Dallas says "Our aim is to excavate (flatten) the existing fields and expand the facility. We would like to begin this September before the region erects pro- tective fences to the west." The proposal states that Van Camp Contracting of Port Perry has quoted a price of $50,000 to excavate and level the fields, and Vallie Farms will prepare and seed the pitches for $600 per acre; more than 15 acres will be done. Money will also be spent to remove and store goal posts while the work in going on, post parking signs, a new sign for the fields and an addition to the existing shelter, as well as the cre- ation of a new fund to be used for the purchase of lands in the future for addi- tional pitches. Scugog Township will soon be the legal owner of the soccer field lands, thanks to a swap between the munici- pality and Durham Region. Land swap with region To get title to the slightly more than 25 acres of soccer facility on Old Simcoe Rd. north of Port Perry, the township will turn over two building lots it owns in Greensboro Dr. in Blackstock, where the region is putting in a new well to serve that community. The township will also deed four acres to the region to buffer the sewage lagoons. The swap is about equal in terms of land values. Committee chair Ken Carruthers said the deal 1s a good one for both sides. No money will change hands and by having ownership of the soccer fields, the municipality guarantees their use for the indefinite future. And the region needs land to buffer its lagoons. Since the sale of the residential lots on Greensboro Dr. was supposed to gen- erate cash for improvements to the Fairgrounds and recreation facilities in Blackstock, Councillor Carruthers said the township will establish a fund and put $3,500 annually in it. This money will be used for rec purposes in Blackstock as required. Councillor Carruthers said a larger sum could be made available for any specific project at the fairgrounds, or for improving the rec centre in Blackstock. . Personalized bh Wedding Services Rf Rev.
