Almost a year after their fundraising effort began, the Prince Albert Public School Playground Committee saw their dream come to fruition last Saturday, as the fin- ishing touches were applied to a brand new, $15,000 Little Tikes Commercial Play Systems playground. Also new for the 1998 school year will be a ball diamond, basketball and volleyball facilities, and freshly painted soccer posts, thanks to a $5,000 grant from Molson Breweries' Local Heroes program. "Everything is coming along very well," said com- mittee member Ollie Pehlemann. "The fundraising went quicker than we expected, but that's good. "We really worked hard on getting this, and we have to thank the com- munity for their help and support." The effort to raise funds for the new equipment began last December. By April volunteers had col- lected enough money to place the order for the equipment. "We had a silent auc- tion and dinner at Trillium Trails, a $3,000 grant from the township, our penny drive and poin- settia sale, and then we got lots of support from local families, businesses and service groups," said Mrs. Pehlemann. That, along with a cheque from Molson's in June, allowed the com- mittee to start the instal- lation of the equipment last Wednesday and finish by Saturday. The effort required a commitment from school community council mem- bers, teachers, and other volunteers, including time donations from Doug Jackson and family and Richard Clark of Clark's Property Maintenance. The result of all the committee's hard work is a 40-foot by 35-foot set-up consisting of various slides, swings, and activi- ties. "We really did this for safety reasons; kids were getting hurt with broken noses and stitches... it was a big issue," said Mrs. Pehlemann. Committee members also feel fortunate to have received the money from Molson's during the first year of the brewery's Local Heroes program. Steve Toms, a Molson representative, said the program is one of the ways his company is trying to give back to small com- munities. "It's an effort by Molson's to get closer to the community. We under- stand that these commu- nities play a large part in the company's success, and we're trying to help them out," he said. "If something needs to be done, and it'll benefit the community, then there's a good chance Molson will be there to help." With the set becoming a safety issue for the school, a group of concerned parents formed a committee last November and raised more than $15,000 in about five months through community support. The group also received an additional $5,000 through Molson Brewery's Local Heroes program and put it towards a new ball diamond as well as basketball and vol- leyball nets. Joining in the celebration, along with a number of local children checking out the new equipment, were committee members Ollie Pehlemann, Kelly Wilson, Donna Marlow, Al Sawtell, and Sue Wilkinson.
