18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, August 11, 1998 ""Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Swim instructor will do lengths for soccer field improvements Port Perry woman approaching goal for fundraiser By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Julie Goodwin is almost halfway to raising $5,000 for improvements to the local municipal soccer pitches. As of the end of last week Ms Goodwin, who runs the SwimKids pro- gram from her home on Old Simcoe St., had raised just over $2,000, and sald she's still waiting for more monéy to come in from various soccer teams who are seeking pledges. Ms Goodwin is raising pledges for a marathon swim in her pool later this month. "So far it's going fairly well... people are being pretty positive about the drive," she said Friday, noting that $2,015 has already been raised. r The real test, she says, will come on Aug. 22 when she will attempt to swim an estimated 10 km in her pool; that's approximately 550 laps. "I've been practicing the last couple of weeks and it's not as easy as I thought it would be. The last 100 laps are tough," Ms Goodwin said, adding that she finally completed the feat once last week. "I finally did it, but it took me about three-and-a-half hours to do: I don't think I'll do it again until the day (Aug. 22) actually comes. For now I'll do my 100 or 200 laps a week and stay with that," she said. With her preparation complete, Ms Goodwin says it's up to the soccer play- ers and supporters to raise the rest of the funds. "I've got pretty much all I can from the kids and parents who I give lessons to, so now we're left with the soccer players," she said. "I've handed out over 50 (pledge) sheets and there's 54 teams, so we'll see what they can raise," Ms Goodwin added. She's offered a free pool party to the soccer team that collects the most pledges. Ms Goodwin said she wanted to hold a fundraiser to benefit the community, and asked the township for ideas on where to direct the funds. The munici- pality suggested the soccer pitches, which are scheduled for extensive ren- ovation. "This is my seventh year in business, and I felt I had some extra time this year," Ms Goodwin told The Star. "So, I approached the mayor (Doug Moffatt) and asked what I could do for the town and he suggested this." The mayor told Ms Goodwin that the Scugog Soccer Club was undertak- Ing major renovations at their pitches this year. Since SwimKids is in the same area as the soccer pitches, the soccer club would be an appropriate beneficiary of the effort, the mayor suggested. Enrollment with the local soccer club has increased this year, with about 850 children registered. Plans call for the field to be levelled, and for entrances to be made larger and safer at the end of the season. It will cost an estimated $100,000. For more information on the effort or to make a pledge, you can call Julie Goodwin at 985-1502 or 985-1709.
