- EL "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" _--- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 7, 1998 - 21 SPORTS land himself his first-ever ace at Sunnybrae. Seth Gray, 18, was jumping for joy recently after using his seven iron to What an Ace Port Perry's Seth Gray fires a hole-in-one at Sunnybrae Golf Club's sixth hole One swing of his seven iron has result- ed in a memory Seth Gray will remember for his entire life. For the tirst time in his 18 years, Mr. Gray used only a single shot to complete the sixth hole at Sunnybrae Golf Course on June 28. It's a shot the Port Perry resident says he's not going to forget anytime soon. "When I first teed off it went really high and it was heading the right way... it looked good. Then it hit the ground once and rolled right in," he said, recall- ing his first ace at the 140-yard par 3 hole. "The pin was near the back of the green and when my friends seen it go in they started jumping up and down. I seen it go in but I never really realized what happened until they started yelling; when they started yelling I did too." While he has only been golfing for a little more than three years, Mr. Gray says that he's happy with his play and with his recent accomplishment. "I started golfing when I was 15 when I seen my older brother (Keven, 20) going. I started copying him and seeing what he was doing and I liked it," he says, adding that he plans to return to Port Perry High School in the fall for his OAC year before possibly moving on to study at Oshawa's Durham College. "I'm not a member at Sunnybrae... I just try and get out at least once a week if I can when I'm not working at Haugen's. I shoot in the 90s, which is not that good, but I was happy with my shot that day. I got the scorecard and the ball; I never used that one again. It's a keeper. "The shot was a pretty good one and I felt great after I made the hole-in-one. The rest of the day I walked around with a smile on my face. I didn't really care how I golfed after that hole." Larry Pilkey honored as tournament MVP Port Merchants come up short against Colborne In weekend tourney action On the weekend of June 26, the Port Perry Merchants Fastball Club competed in the Curve Lake Annual Fastball Tournament. The Merchants first game was against Peterborough's Zoo Bar. Port Perry won this game 5-2. Paul Stead got the win. Port's next game was against a tough Hoard Station team. Chad Venning went the distance in a 3-0 win. The Merchants then faced the powerful Colborne Rutherflo in the undefeated matchup. The young New Zealander, Paul Stead, took the mound for Port. Stead had an excellent outing but the power hitting Colborne team was able to hit three solo home runs off the rookie. The final score was Colborne 3 - Port Perry 1. Port Perry's run came from a Duane Empringham triple followed by a John Ennis single. Port then faced the Bradford Sox. The Merchants won the game 5-3. Venning got the win in this game. One of this games highlights was a home run by second base- man Darrel Vander Slagt. This win put the Merchants into the cham- pionship game against Colborne Rutherflo. In order to win the tourna- ment, Port had to beat the undefeated Colborne team, two games in a row. Port Perry's bats came alive this game as they took the lead late in the game 6-3. Colborne battled back and tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. - In the bottom of the sev- enth, Larry Pilkey started the inning with a double. Duane Empringham then dropped a sacrifice bunt to move Pilkey to third. A Vander Slagt line drive over the right fielder's head brought in the win- ning run. The final score was Port 7 - Colborne 6. Special mention to Larry Pilkey who hit a home run and drove in four RBIs. In the winner take all game, Colborne took a 5-1 lead until the fifth inning when Pilkey's second long ball of the game made it 5-4. Unfortunately the pitching staff of Venning and Stead had run out of gas. The final score was Colborne 9 - Port Perry 4. Port loaded the bases twice in this game but were unable to bring in the run- ners. Larry Pilkey had a hot bat this game as he had two home runs and three RBIs. Pilkey was named tournament MVP... The Port Perry Merchants would like to thank sponsors Jayda Holsteins, Taylor fuels, Goreski's Lakeside Recreation and KCI Gas & Variety. The Merchants play in Aurora Tuesday, July 7 but are back home Thursday, July 9.
