"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 7, 1998 - 15 New Rotary president ready for challenge By Chris Hall Port Perry Star After just five years as a member of the Rotary Club of Port Perry, Myles O'Riordan now holds the club's top seat. The youngest member of the local service club, Mr. O'Riordan, 38, assumed the presidency on July 1. He was elected to the post. Mr. O'Riordan takes over from outgoing president John Richardson after serving a term as vice-president. He hopes to be as successful as his predecessor. "John's done a lot for the club and the community in the last year... I think I have some pretty big shoes to fill," he said last week from his business, Wagg Funeral Home Ltd., where he is owner and funeral director. "I would like for my term to be as successful as his was. My goal is to make things go smoothly like "they did last year." One goal that he will work toward will be Rotary's trail project on the lakefront, which he hopes will bring in even more tourists to Port Perry. "The main project for us this year will be the waterfront plan- ning," said Mr. O'Riordan. "We've got a committee formed to help develop the park and continue the walkway around Palmer Park, past the ball diamonds along the shore, and back around Reid's gro- cery store to (Highway) 7A." Other annual events such as August's Aquarama, ArtFest, the Christmas dinner for seniors and this fall's Monte Carlo Night will also run as usual, he adds. These events, which raise money for the community and Rotary International, are what the club is all about, said Mr. O'Riordan. "The Rotary Club is very impor- tant to the community. We are all active members in helping out locally and internationally. You get a lot of satisfaction from doing these things, from helping out," he said. "It's good to give back to the community where you live and work; you can't be a taker all the time, you've got to give sometimes , too. It's the way I was raised." Port Perry's Rotary Club, which currently has close to 30 members, is still looking for more new faces. They meet each Wednesday evening at Emiel's Restaurant. Mr. O'Riordan, a Humber College graduate, is also a member of the OddFellows Club, the Knights of Columbus, and is past president of the Bay of Quinte Funeral Services Association.
