For the 12th consecutive year a Canada Day Picnic is being planned by the committee to be held at Ashburn Park. The park opens at 11 a.m. and activities wind down at 3:30 p.m. with a tug-o-war. This year's big event is for the kids - a dressed up bike parade. Open to everyone 10 years old or younger, the parade will feature prizes in a number of categories including: best dressed, silliest bike and best overall design with the usual fun and games, with soccer, mid- way races, egg toss and much more. The committee invites everyone to come out, enjoy Canada Day, meeting new neigh- bors and get reacquainted with the older ones. Hope to see you there. Brooklin Horticultural Society held their iris show and general meeting at Burns Church last Monday night. In spite of the early bloom season there were 73 entries on the show bench, including a good number of iris. Best iris specimen award went to Carol Catton, and best deco- rative won by Mary Wonnacott for her entry of "Summer Breezes." Congratulations ladies. We were privileged to have Elizabeth Forester address the subject of growing and using herbs, which was most interest- ing and informative. Wednesday, June 25 will be Ashburn area news J Florence Ashton ---- the annual rose show held at Brooklin United Church at 8 p.m. Douglas Lycett will be the guest speaker and will speak on day lilies. If you are an avid lily grower, come out and hear this excellent speaker. The Ladies Bible Class met at the home of Bernice Gardner on Wednesday, June 17. President Florence Ashton Ashburn Park will be the venue for this year's Canada Day festivities chaired the meeting, opening with a poem "June's Delights." Hymn "There Shall Be Showers of Blessing" was sung. Scripture Acts 16: 16-29 was read by Joan Knight. Meditation entitled "Everyday Blessings." Joan led in prayer. "More about Jesus" was sung. Offering was received with treasurer's report. Minutes of the last meeting were read. A discussion followed as to what we might do to celebrate our 60th anniversary of the group in 1999. Program was conducted by Lexie Pettus who showed a video by Bill Moyers on the "Murder of Cain." Our hostess served tasty refreshments over a cup of tea. We meet again in September at Sheila Parrotts in Uxbridge. We are pleased to hear that Catherine Humphrey is home again following her accident. John Hopkins has had recent surgery and 1s progressing well at home. Margaret Davis underwent knee surgery last Tuesday in Toronto. We wish her well and hope she will have a speedy recov- ery. We were saddened to learn on Sunday morning of Matt Agar's sudden passing at his home in Brooklin. He had the misfortune to have a huge honey pot fall upon him. His funeral was held from Brooklin United Church on Monday afternoon. Hope all the fathers enjoyed their special day on Sunday. Caesarea Ratepayers Association Don't forget this Saturday night June 27 at 7:30 p.m. at Caesarea Hall is our Canada Day Celebrations. Finger painting for youth under seven years old by members of the hall board. All kinds of other races for seven to 14 years. Pictures with a short talk on the old hotels that once were here in Caesarea. Free blue box flyers showing new products you may put in your box and pick up dates of the blue box. See the improvements the hall board has made to the inside of the hall. Take part in the 50/50 draw. Canada is your country, come out and show your pride and love of being a Canadian. Pine Ridge Garden Club The bus trip for September is on Thursday, the tenth, not the eleventh. The fax didn't print it too clearly. Members are now getting ready for the tractor pull at Blackstock Fairgrounds. Lake Scugog Historical Society and Museum Board Work is continuing on the Rodman Cabin at the Scugog Shores Museum. When you have friends down take them over to this historic center. It's well worth seeing. Buildings are open from noon to 4 p.m. week days except Mondays. My son Ken, a father, me, my daughter-in-law's father Eric Alm and his wife's father, John. Ages ranged from 44 to 91 years.
