On Thursday a large crowd of area residents and friends and colleagues from other areas joined at the CCPS gym for a lovely "Tea for Two" to honor Anne Rink and Marie McIntosh on their retirement. The staff made a humorous skit on the word "Retirement." Presentations of gifts were made to the two honored ladies after which each replied fittingly. Best wishes Anne and Marie. On Wednesday evening a Retirement Roast will be held at the Rec. Centre to honor Eric Fletcher on his retirement from CHS. Call the high school to RSVP as soon as possible. Better health is wished for Ruth Thompson in Port Perry Hospital, Nicole Gibson who underwent surgery in a Toronto hospital, Valerie Linton who is in Kingston General Hospital and Anna McLaughlin who is home after undergoing emer- gency surgery in Port Perry Hospital. On Saturday morning the "Touch of Country" sang at the Norwood Retirement Home which Ron Martyn operates. Most of the ladies remained to enjoy lunch with the residents there. If you plan to make a donation to the "Come and Go Evening," which will be held Friday, July 10 to honor Jill Van Camp, bride- Blackstock to-be who will be living in Bermuda, please do so this week. Saturday evening June 27 will be the annual Strawberry Supper at the United Church beginning at 4:30 p.m. Tickets are purchased at the door. All are welcome. Next Sunday, June 28 at 10:30 a.m. is the annual Outdoor Service when the Nestleton and Blackstock United Churches combine. It will be held at Camp Scugog, St. Christophers Beach Rd. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and remain for the open house of Camp Scugog in the afternoon. There were eight tables at the weekly card party with the following winners: Reid Harness, Vivian Kidd, Richard Potter, Teresa Berker, Vera Fawns, Ray Staples and Kathleen Watts. Winners of the draws were Kathleen Watts (two), Grant Bright and Vera Fawns. Members of the Blackstock Agricultural Society will be busy completing plans for the annual Tractor and Truck Pull which will be held next weekend on Friday and Saturday evenings, July 3 and 4. Setup of the grounds will take place on Monday evening so if you wish to help, just show up at the fair- grounds. Shuffleboard is held each Wednesday at the arena. If you wish to either be part of the action or be a spectator just pop in. Visitors are welcome. Members attend from many dis- tant points to be part of this exciting sport. St. John's During the Sunday morning service at St. John's, Father Hugh baptized baby Tamara Margaret Josephine Pantaleo, and welcomed her into the church. Tamara is the daughter of Franco Pantaleo and Misty Chapman and granddaughter of Chris and Melody Chapman of Blackstock. In recognition that Sunday was also Father's Day, the children of the Church School presented each father, grandfa- ther and great-grandfather (and several persons who didn't qual- ify in either category) with a small basket of candy. Fathers, etc, were delighted and wish to say a hearty 'thank you' for this demonstration of love. On Sunday afternoon, there was a happy gathering in the Parish Hall as friends and neigh- bors joined with family members at a wedding shower for Gordon Bentley and Tricia Hamilton. Gordon and Tricia will be mar- ried at St. John's on July 4. On Sunday, June 28 we cele- brate the 168th anniversary of the founding of the Parish of Cartwright. Our Parish Birthday occurs on the Feast of our Patron Saint, John the Baptist. We nor- mally celebrate this event on the Sunday following the 24th (unless, of course, the Feast falls on Sunday). The festivities begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Sunday Eucharist during which Church School Certificates will be pre- sented. There will be special music for the occasion. After the service, the children of the Parish will provide the Feast, a barbecue picnic lunch for all parishioners. Great news this week from the Warner's with the arrival of their first grand- son. Trystan Warner Lackner, 7 lbs. 8 ozs. was born in Pickering on June Heinz baby food labels in sup- port of Sick Children's Hospital. Ten cents a label is reimbursed to the hospital. Prayer circle for healing is being held at Utica Church on Thursday evening starting at 7:30 p.m. for anyone who wishes to attend and pray together for healing and remembering those in need. Saturday's Epsom Indy was, once again, very successful bringing the community together for a great day of racing and fun. There was a big of a scare when one of the young racers upset his cart but luckily, after being checked out thoroughly, it was determined that there weren't any broken - bones. Fortunately also, the rain held off until most of the races were run. Thanks to all the organizers, helpers, participants and the ladies who baked pies for the tea room. I was saddened to hear that Ted Bridge has not been well and at present is a patient in hospital in Port Perry. Rod McKay was in St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto last week where he underwent surgery to repair a protruding disk and is home recuperating, with orders to take it easy for a while. Strawberry Garden Party set for July 7 It is with great sadness that we report that Joe Dowson passed away. The funeral will be from Waggs on Wednesday at 1 p.m. Our sincere sympathy is extended to his wife, Clara, son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Janet, and grand- son Jonathon and family. Joe and Clara recently retired from delivering the R.R. #3 mail. Scugog Island Women's Institute Vice president Mary Ostrom opened the June 17 meeting at 8 p.m. at the Scugog Island Hall. "What country in South America would you like to visit?" was answered by 14 mem- bers and one visitor. Mrs. Betty Somerville spoke about her trip to Guyana where she was one of a group of 10 who oper- ated a free medical clinic for two weeks in Bartica and surrounding commu- - nities in the third world country.
