They were joined by 2,550 workers from the No. 2 plant, which produces the Buick Centuries and Regals. Mr. Low said employees at the second plant were instructed not to report to work this week. "I don't think they ran out of engine cradles at the second plant, it was just a call made by GM," he said yesterday. "They finished the Friday night shift but there were so few parts left after that it didn't make sense to call them in for Monday." Components are ordered and used on a day-to-day basis, so there is not a large stockpile of parts at the Oshawa plants. Meanwhile the Oshawa truck plant, which will produce the 1999 line of the extended cab full-size pickup, is still func- tional. "The truck plant is fine. Right now they're in the change over launch phase for the new truck and (the strike) has no impact at this point," Mr. Low said of the 3,800 employees at Ontario's only GM truck plant. Besides affecting the two local car plants, the strike by the two American operations has sent 6560 workers at a St. Catharines component plant home. The disruption has not affected production at Ste. Therese, Quebec's Camaro and Firebird production sites. The stoppage at the two car plants has drawn different reactions from employees, said Mr. Low. "There tends to be a mixed bag when it comes to how the employees are handling it," he said. "For some it's all right because they have lots to do around the house, so it gives them a little extra time to get it done. But for the most part, I think most of them want to build cars; they want to contribute." GM workers in Ontario affected by the strike will generally receive about 65 per cent of their gross pay, said Mr. Low. PERRY Good 3 bedroom bungalow with large eat-in kitchen, hardwood floors, full basement and oll heating. Large lot. Asking Officials urge caution on hydro decisions From page 1 customers that so-called power brokers do not rep- resent existing utilities, and that customers should make sure they are well informed before signing up with anyone offering lower rates. Mayor Moffatt said that until all the facts are in, there is no way of knowing if anyone will actually be cheaper than the service provider available now. "We want people to be w A GREAT LAKE SCUGOG COTTAGE: Excellent waterfront with sand bottom. Includes most contents & 12' aluminum boat with almost new 9.9 motor. Ready for summer fun. Could by yours for Victoria Day. fully aware of the options before making a decision or signing with anyone mak- ing promises of cheaper hydro." Scugog Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden is of the same mind. "It's very early in the process yet; no one needs to make choices now, and I wouldn't advise people to make a choice of service provider at all right now," he said. "Be cautious, that's all." Scugog Hydro manager Terry Adderley feels that any one attempting to sign up customers for hydro ser- vice at this point is selling a pig in a poke. "None of the decisions about rates or even who will be responsible for Ontario Hydro's present debt of almost $30 billion have been made," he said. "They (brokers) don't know any more than we do what the final effect on rates will be." Asking $94,900. sulin CARESS - Close to all SUP ER SEMI & LOCATION! - 375 Cochrane St., Port Perry. 3 bedrooms.
