18- PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 9, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" Paddling for dollars Canoe the Nonquon raises $3,000 for museum Almost 140 participants came out to help the Canoe The Nonquon event cele- brate its 30th birthday last weekend, when the annual fundraiser was held. Joan Scott, one of the many organizers of the event, said yesterday that 80 pairs of canoeists raised almost $3,000 for the Scugog Historical Society, which will be passed on as operating funds for the Scugog Shores Museum. "It was about the same as we had last year, and that's okay for us; we're still getting people to come out each year and that's the important thing," said Mrs. Scott, noting that not all the expenses had been accounted for yet. "We're going to end up with between $2,500 and $3,000 after we pay all our bills," Mrs. Scott said, listing off the brochures, mail, trophy medal engraving and advertising as costs that are incurred each year. She passed on thanks to all the volun- teers who came out, especially two local volunteer firefighters who spent the day on the lake in the Scugog Fire Department boat, keeping an eye on par- ticipants. One thing that she says that did aston- ish Mrs. Scott about the annual event was the effort of two S.A. Cawker stu- dents, who spent a large chunk of their time collecting pledges for their partici- pation in the event. "We had two girls from the school enter and they collected $241," she said, extending a large thanks to Christy Newbold and Carley Caldwell. "These two girls went out on their own and raised all this money for us; that's pretty impressive for two young people. We really appreciate what they did for us." Dale and Dean Lown were recognized by organizers for bringing in the most donations, with $285. The team of Lawrence McLaughlin and Roy Corden brought in $200. The 30th anniversary of Canoe The Nonquon also marked a special day for Mrs. Scott, however. "That's it for me. I've done this for 30 years now and it's time that the young people took over," she said. "All of my children have done it and two of my grandchildren participated in it this weekend. "When I see my grandkids do that I know I've been at it a while, and it's time to pass it on." Womens' workshop coming up June 16 The Uxbridge Women's Wellness Workshop will present "Women in Relationships" on Tuesday, June 16 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Uxbridge Music Hall.
