"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, June 2, 1998 - 13 Durham Police Youth problems are being cleared up in Cartwright, Port, say A recent "zero tolerance" push by Durham Regional Police on problem- causing teens in'the area, specifi- cally those in Blackstock, appears to be working. Sgt. Ken Hudson, an officer with Port Perry's 26 Division, says that in light of recent arrests and charges made by police, teen activity in the area has dropped. "We've been doing more and more patrols in problem areas such as Blackstock and the Port Perry Plaza; the places we know youths frequent- ly hang out. "We are further trying to enforce the "zero tolerance" position we have taken in hopes of stopping some of the things that are going on," he said yesterday, listing loiter- ing and obstructing as two of the concerns many residents have about large crowds of youths hanging around. "People want to be able to go about their way and not be dis- turbed; they don't want people obstructing them. They want to be able to go on about their normal, every day activities." Problem areas, such as Blackstock, haven't been a concern of late, he continues. "Things are settling down. The kids are co-operating with us and you can see a change there. It has been a lot better there recently than what it was. We've talked to a few of the kids there and we know what they're doing," he said, adding there was no problems last weekend and that only a small core cause trouble. And with the wind blowing in your face, the soothing powerful rumble beneath you and the sunshine reflecting from the chrome detail, it's no wonder. But ask yourself how it would feel it you could not see and were unable to absorb the beauty and freedom of the open road. In an effort to fight blindness, with a distinct roar, the 1998 Ride for Sight will once again parade through Southern and Central Ontario enroute to Collingwood for the biggest fundraising motorcycle rally in Canada. Motorcycle enthusiasts, from Bay Street to Main Street, will gather for a three-day festival in support of eye research, specifically Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) and macular degeneration. These diseases are the leading causes of inherited blindness and affect more than 500,000 Canadian children and adults. The 1998 Central Ontario Ride for Sight, held June 19, 20 and 21, will capitalize on the tradition of previous Rides, but will see significant changes including a new location in Collingwood; an_expanded format with more venues and activities; and an exciting, live entertainment lineup. "This year's Ride has evolved not only to raise awareness and money for RP, but also to attract and entertain a wide portion of the ever expanding motorcycling community," says Brian Larter, President, RP Research Foundation, and motorcycle enthusiast. "The 1998 Central Ontario Ride for Sight will definitely be the best ever with a fundraising goal set at more than $500,000 and an entertainment lineup that will include some of the country's most talented musicians." "Motorcyclists and bike manufacturers are equally enthused about the event," says Doug Decent, Marketing Manager, Fred Deeley Imports Ltd., Canada's exclusive Harley-Davidson distributor. "We've always been a strong supporter of the event and are very honored to take an active part at this year's event." Riders/donors interested in supporting this important fundraising event are invited to contact the RP Foundation in Toronto at (416) 360-4200, or toll free at 1-800-461-3331.
