10- PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, May 20, 1998 "Scugog's Community Newspaper of Choice" O'Toole's Heritage Day bill moves on § By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Irish Heritage Day has taken another step toward being proclaimed in Ontario, Durham East MPP John O'Toole proudly announced last week. His private member's bill, the Act of Proclaiming Irish Heritage Day, passed second reading Thursday (March 14), and could pass into law by next month. Mr. O'Toole insists his goal of making March 17 -- ~-- Some bookings for May installations still available Irish day would officially mark March 17 St. Patrick's Day -- a day of official recognition is not solely a celebration of descendants of Emerald Isle, but to salute all who have helped make Canada such a great country. "This is not exclusive to Just the Irish; this is all- inclusive," said Mr. O'Toole. "Sure, the Irish have brought their values of hard work and devotion to family and community here, but so have other immigrants as well. This is a day for Beat the heat in quiet comfort! He hopes to have third and final reading of the bill completed by June 12, just before MPPs break for the summer. Mr. O'Toole announced his private member's bill just before St. Patrick's Day this year. Surprisingly enough, the second reading on May 14 had unanimous support of the MPPs in the legislature. "It was quite an inter- esting day," he said from his Bowmanville con- stituency office. "Actually, it's quite overwhelming. It went very well, and there was not one person against it. Usually there's some sniping, but it looks like everyone agrees with it; not one person said a word against it." The Irish were among the largest ethnic group arriving in Canada between 1840 and 1880, as thousands fled famine in their homeland. Mr. O'Toole contends they helped estab- lish the societal values that are cherished by Canadians today "They brought all their good talents with them and, now, there are more people in Canada with Irish descendants than there are in Ireland," he said.
