EE ee Ra Nurses celebrate 2% wage hike in delayed contract PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, May 12, 1998 -5 Huge haul taken during Cartwright home break-in Attempted auto theft Durham Regional By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The agreement ham- mered out between Ontario's hospitals and nurses is a step in the right direction, says a local representative. Bev Brown, the advo- cacy and lobbying rep for Region 8 of the Ontario Nurses Association (ONA), says that while it was a long time coming, she is generally pleased with the deal, which awards nurses more money and benefits. "The negotiator did a great job preserving what we already have, helped recognize the work done and what we do, and hope- fully it will continue in the next round," she said. Arbitrator Judge Lloyd W. Houlden announced May 5 that approximately 40,000 Ontario hospital registered nurses and paramedical employees would receive a 2 per cent wage increase retroactive to April 1, 1997; increased pregnancy and parental top-up pay; improved job security and layoff lan- guage, a severance pack- age and training options. The deal concludes two years of bargaining between the ONA and the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA). It pro- vides for two-year collec- tive agreement covering the period of April 1, 1996 to March 31, 1998. The ONA and the OHA will begin negotiations on a new agreement shortly. The best news for nurs- es 1s the wage increase, said Ms Brown. "The 2 per cent increase 1s probably the best thing for the nurses and the improved severance pack- ages and retraining options are good as well," she said. "I've been in this busi- ness almost 30 years and some of these things are getting scary. It's good that the government is offering better packages and retraining, but there are still nurses graduat- ing with no jobs. They're forced to go to the U.S. or other provinces to get jobs, and that's a lot of people getting lost." Nurses here will have an opportunity to view the agreement at the end of the month, when they will go over it clause by clause. Members will also be able to give their input towards what they want to see in the new contract when talks resume this summer. Nurses have gone with- out a raise for close to eight years after enduring former NDP government's social contract restric- tions, and then waiting for an arbitrated settle- ment. "The cost of living has gone up a lot since we last got a pay hike," said Ms Brown. Under the old contract the average hourly rate for a nurse was about $17, and it topped out at $27.80. The top annual salary would be about $54,000 and the average would run roughly $40,000. Sometime during the evening last Wednesday (May 6) between the hours of 4:30 and 8 p.m., police say thieves backed a vehicle up to the rear of a Fowler Line home and entered through a door. Once inside they made their way through the liv- ing room, master bedroom and kitchen and stole a JVC stereo, amplifier, tuner, cassette player, and CD player; a 27" GE TV; two complete com- puter systems; two rings; and some cash. Also taken during the break-in was a Remington .306 rifle val- ued at $1,000, which was taken from a locked case. Also missing is a Lee Enfield 303 bullet-action n estimated to be worth 200. | An attempt to steal a vehicle from a Gibson Dr. home in Port Perry has landed two Toronto men in police custody. Durham Police report that sometime around 4:15 a.m. on May 3 the home owner awoke to the sounds of a horn blowing. Getting up to check, police say the man saw two males near his vehicle in the driveway. Upon noticing that they were heing watched, the suspects fled on foot east on Alma St. into a white Camaro, say police. A neighbor witnessing the theft attempt jumped in his vehicle and pursued the thieves. While he could not catch them, he did take down the car's plate numbers, police say. A check was run by Durham Police on the plates and the Camaro was later picked up on Highway 401 by police. Two Toronto men were taken into custody and Durham Police are inves- tigating the incident.
