3 "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 24, 1998 - 9 Ecumenical walk is on for Good Friday In Palmer Park The Churches of Scugog will be holding their second annual com- munity Good Friday observance, on the morn- ing of April 10. Beginning at 9:30 a.m. the bandstand in Palmer Park, the service marks the last day of Jesus' life in Jerusalem by walking together and pausing at various points for a prayer and a reading from Luke's Gospel. Anyone who has trav- elled to Jerusalem will note the resemblance to the "Via Dolorosa," the walk said to be in Jesus' footsteps, from the sites of his arrest, trial and car- rying of the cross to the site of the tomb. Here in Port Perry, the walk consists of seven "stations," each with members of a different church leading in the reading, and carrying a rough cedar rail cross to the next station. The vol- unteering churches include Emmanuel Pentecostal, Port Perry/Prince Albert United, Victory Christian Centre, Church of the Ascension, Scugog [sland/ Manchester United, St. John's Presbyterian and Greenbank/Seagrave United. The first walk, last year, with short notice and little publicity, drew a crowd of about 300 peo- ple. Some churches will be regarding the walk as their Good Friday Service, while others have sched- uled worship in their church building later in the day. The route for the walk stays on streets and side- walks and is wheelchair accessible. A portable sound system will be used to ensure that all are able to hear the readers. The walk will take about 45 minutes and concludes in the fellowship hall of Port Perry United Church with hot drinks and refresh- ments. This 1s a non- denominational event and all, regardless of church affiliation, are invited to participate. Dog, 10 pup A husky dog and her lit- ter of pups will be put up for adoption after being rescued from an abandoned burrow last week by local animal control officers. A very special home will be sought for the four-year- old dog, which apparently had been left outside by her owners last weekend when it came time for the pups to arrive, said Shirley Kohler of the Uxbridge- Scugog Animal Control Centre. Alerted by a concerned resident, officers from the shelter went to a site In Uxbridge Township and soon determined that the dog had entered a burrow in a roadside embankment to give birth to the pups. With the assistance of a township employee, animal control officers Vickie McWhirter and Susan Peleikis spent two hours digging in an effort to extract the dog and her pups. She's now resting com- fortably at the Port Perry shelter, where she'll wean the litter of 10 husky cross pups over the next six weeks. The pooch, named Timber, is "very, very gen- tle -- a lovely dog," said Mrs. Kohler, adding the They were rescued by Animal Control officers s will need good homes This four-year-old husky and her 10 pups will be up for adoption in a few weeks, but until then they're being kept at the Animal control shelter in Port Perry.
