"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 17, 1998 - 3 The greening of Scugog Annual effort has goal of refurbishing the township's tree-lined road allowances By Heather McCrae Port Perry Star Scugog Township will be greener once more this year, thanks to the efforts of Cartwright resident Joan Graham. For several years Mrs. Graham has voluntarily planted trees in Cartwright, and has also sold trees at cost or less to anyone who wants them for the road allowance in front of their property. Now the project has expanded to include the entire township, but Mrs. Graham needs the help of residents to make it a success. It's hoped 2,000 trees will be planted from now until the arrival of the millennium, and the slogan "2,000 Trees Until 2000" aptly applies to the program. Mrs. Graham says she got the idea of enhancing the countryside with trees when she and her husband Harvey were touring fair- grounds in South Africa during a Guernsey World Conference 15 years ago. "The fairgrounds were absolutely gorgeous, adorned with so many beautiful trees," she said. "I immediately thought this is what Blackstock needs, and began to think what I could do about it." A few years later she contacted the Kawartha Conservation Authority, asking them if she could order trees to be planted throughout Blackstock, and she's been doing it ever since. "We used to have beautiful roadsides, but now they're dying," Mrs. Graham said. "Up to this point we've had beautifully green and beautiful sideroads, but in 20 years from now they will all be gone, mostly because of their age and salt damage." 'We used to have beautiful roadsides, but now they're dying,' says Joan Graham All orders for trees must be in by the end of March, and are delivered the latter part of April. For years now Mrs. Graham has been able to buy bare rooted trees at a commercial price from a local nursery, enabling her to pass the savings on to resi- dents. To place an order call Mrs. Graham at 986- 4856. Those living in the northern part of the township can place orders with Wendy McKinnon in Manilla (705-357-2057). Other people who have volunteered to help by taking orders and having trees delivered to their driveway later next month are Karen Puckrin (985-3940), Laurie Heron (985-1507), Glen Lehman (986-1719), Bev Stanley (985-9269), Charles and Carol Matthews (985-8584) and Dan Lawryshyn (985- 8230). All orders must be picked up the day they are delivered. Two ladies' groups in Blackstock, the ONO (Our Night Out) and the Womens' Institute, have donated money several times to help defray costs of the trees. If other service clubs would like to donate money or buy trees for subdivisions or the countryside, it would also be appreciated. The six types of trees to choose from are the Norway Maple, Sugar Maple, Green Ash, Linden, Birch and Mountain Ash. Prices begin at $12.50 each. "It's a small price to pay, yet beautiful trees can enhance property values," said Mrs. Graham. Taking orders, collecting money and ensuring the township stays green is a project Mrs. Graham velun- teers for each spring. She enjoys this work and feels everyone should volunteer to do something. Keeping Scugog green happens to be her choice. Call to place your order today. Joan Graham of Purple Hill is once more coordi- nating a project that sees homeowners supplied with trees at a low cost. They're to be planted on road allowances as part of a township-wide beauti- fication effort.
