"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, March 17, 1998 - 23 Little Britain wins 3-2, loses 6-5 By John B. McClelland Port Perry Star If the first two games are any indi- cation, the Little Britain Merchants must do one thing if they want to defeat the Campbellford Rebels and move on to the next round of Junior C playoffs -- - stay out of the penalty box. In the first two games of this best- of-seven affair, the Rebels have notched eight goals. And seven of them have been with a man advantage, while the other came while shorthanded. The series stood at one game each after the weekend, with the Merchants taking the first game 3-2 Friday on the road, and the Rebels hanging on for a 6-5 win the next night in Little Britain. Game three was Monday night in Campbellford and game four is back in Little Britain Wed. night (March 18) at 8 p.m. Bryce Levesque was the big man Saturday night for the Rebels as he scored a natural hat trick midway through the contest to break open a close game and give his team a 6-3 lead. With the game tied at three in the second period, Levesque scored his first at 14:29 as the Rebels enjoyed a five- on-three advantage. : The Merchants were still short a man a little over a minute later when Levesque clicked again, and he opened the third period with a goal 45 seconds in to up the lead to 6-3. If there is one thing the Merchants can do with the best of them, it is score goals when they are down. Chris Cross Merchants, Rebels open series with a win each made it 6-4 early in the third and at 12:59, Jon Perrin cut the margin to one as he pushed the puck across the line off a big scramble in the Rebel goal mouth. For the rest of the game, the Merchants buzzed around in the Rebel zone pressing for the equalizer, but the Rebels did a lot of "dump the puck out" and held on to preserve the victory and even the series. Other Merchant goal scorers in this one were captain Chad Desjardins with a pair and Tim Teel with a singletone. For the Rebels, Kevin Larmer, Chris Turner and J.P. Goulah did the damage. In the series opener Friday night, the Merchants opened a 3-0 lead on markers by Corby Purdy, Jeff Darrach and Jay Marquis before the Rebels re- grouped to score a couple of their own from Larmer and Levesque to fight their way back. But it wasn't enough as Merchants held on for the 3-2 win. Both netminders have been busy in the first two games of the series. The Merchants' Steve Thomas and 15-year- old Ben Kerr of the Rebels have seen a lot of rubber. But, the key so far, has been the Rebel power play, firing seven of the eight goals the team has scored. Game five is Friday in Campbellford at 8 p.m.; and game six is in Little Britain Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Should the series go the distance, and this is a distinct possibility, game seven 1s Monday, March 23 in Campbellford at 8:30 p.m. Prior to the start of the series, sup- porters of both teams were predicting their favourite would wrap things up in five games.
