Local audiences will have the oppor- tunity to find out or rekindle memories of that desperate decade when Port Perry's Borelians bring George Luscombe's "Ten Lost Years" to Town all 1873 Feb. 26 to 28 and March 5 to This extremely ambitious production, produced and directed by Dave Ellis, provides a series of stories dealing with every aspect of life during the dirty thirties, from the light relief provided by live radio programming to the des- peration of unemployment and the degradation of government relief. While the subject matter is real and biting, the play focuses on the strength of the human spirit, the ability to endure, and the qualities of hope and dignity. Each story possesses its own unique subject matter, but blends seamlessly with the next to produce a total sense of what the times, and the people of those times, were like, including the music that was so characteristic of the 30s. "Ten Lost Years" was originally pro- duced in Toronto in 1974 using a format known as workshop:production. This allows the actors and the director to work together to create an interpreta- tion of the playwright's vision. The result is a very personal exchange between the players and the audience. The Borelian's production follows this tradition and includes a scene cre- ated by the cast and director telling of the Depression in Scugog. These are areas where ice is likely to form first or be the most Braking if you don't have anti-lock brakes: If you don't have anti-lock brakes, the most efficient technique for braking under these conditions is to use threshold braking together with de-clutching (manual shift) or shifting to neutral (automatic transmission). The best way to threshold brake (to make a controlled stop) is the heel and toe method. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use your toes to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal just short of lockup to the point at which the wheels Under the stress of trying to stop quickly, drivers almost inevitably overreact and lock the wheels. If this happens, use toe and heel action to release brake pressure one or two degrees, then immediately reapply it with To survive on the road in winter, proper braking is essential. » Stopping on slippery surfaces means motorists must increase sight lines, following and stopping distances. Beware of shaded spots, bridges, Runaways caught after chase in Port Two youths who had been reported missing were arrested Thursday after they attempted to enter a vehicle on Crandell St., say police. Durham Regional Police were called to the home just before 2 p.m. on Feb. 12 after the owner noticed two young males trying to enter his van. A resident on the street gave chase, and the youngsters ran off. They were eventually found inside a business on Water St. and arrested. The two youths, aged 13 and 14, had gone missing from the care of the Children's Aid Society in Toronto, and had apprehension warrants out on them, say police. The youngsters admitted to hiding out in an ice hut on Scugog Point for the past few days, and had spent the night prior to their arrest at a local motel after a res- ident had bought them a room for the evening. They were later released to a foster home in Pickering and no charges were laid, police say. Braking Not Breaking slightly less pressure. Braking with anti-lock brakes: According to a survey conducted by the CAA/AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 50 percent of people are unaware of how anti-lock brakes and traditional brakes differ. If you have an anti-lock brake system (ABS), use the heel and toe method, but do not remove your foot from the brake. When you put on the brakes hard enough to make the wheels lock momentarily, you will typically feel the brake pedal pulse back against your foot. Don't let up! (Novice ABS users can try hard braking in a vacant snow-covered parking lot.) How ABS Works: A sensor located at each wheel detects when the wheel stops turning and starts to skid. As a stop.
