Mayor Doug Moffatt took time before the regu- lar council session began to commend all firefighters for their bravery during the search, and made par- ticular note of the contri- butions of District Chief Dave Ballingall. "District Chief Ballingall exercised emi- nently good judgement in his dealings with the media, which brought cred- "it to the township," said the mayor. "All the Scugog firefighters acted with a professionalism that does this township credit." Regional Councillor Ken Gadsden said "Chief Ballingall proved a valu- able service to both the media and the Durham and Metro Police diving DAVE BALLINGALL: Praised by councillors teams through out the search. "The actions of all the firefighters are worthy of praise and are deserving of our praise." In a presentation to council on policing in Scugog Township," Inspector Chuck Mercier, commanding officer of 26 Division in Port Perry, also commended local firefight- ers and citizens for their help in the search. Mercier made spe- cial note of the efforts by Island residents and per- sonally thanked Councillor Gadsden and his wife Margo for soup they pro- vided to divers, who braved icy waters to search for the bodies of two snowmo- bilers who perished off Scugog Island. Insp. Mercier also men- tioned the help of the Metro Police marine unit, and their air boat. "I would ask council to send Chief (David) Boothby a letter of thanks." Insp. Mercier said Durham will not receive a bill from Metro for the eight man dive team, or the airboat used for three days in the search to recov- er the bodies of Christopher Raines, 20 and Shane Cobb, 31, who drowned when their snow machines hit open water within minutes of each other on Jan. 15. Council voted unani- mously in favor of the letter of thanks to the Metro Police Chief. Community saddened by the passing of Marlene Desautels Our community is very saddened in the passing last week of Marlene Desautels. Marlene was a very long time resident of this area. She grew up in Port Perry, attending R.H. Cornish Public School and Port Perry High School. Ray and Marlene enjoyed living in Seagrave for over 25 years. Marlene was known to all as the most cheerful, positive, kind, fun person who always had some- thing good to say about everyone. Along with Ray, Marlene thoroughly enjoyed everything her kids were involved in, ice hockey, music, etc. Marlene courageously battled cancer for the past nine years. She was determined to "Beat This Thing", as she put it, and did many times, but sadly she suffered a set back recently. I'm sure we will all remember her for her determination and posi- tive attitude. Many of us, especially the young children, will remember Marlene as she drove her 'Little Yellow School Bus' through the Seagrave area - of course, waving to all us adults, with a big smile, as we Spl Seagrave by Ann SEL [ife](e drove to work! Our thoughts today are with her family. In par- ticular to her Mum, Clare Warren, and especially to her husband and partner Ray. To their children Darren and his wife Kelly, Joanne and Steve and her sisters/brothers and their families Joan Holliday, Phyllis Gear, Jack Warren, Nancy Hanna and Linda Card. Our community has lost a very fine Lady and friend. Other Seagrave News Happy Birthday this week to Brandon Puckrin, Heather Wray and Krystal Manitius. Seagrave Church News Reverend Carson's ser- mon on Sunday, 'Vital Congregations', Churches need Unity, our gifts and the desire to be together. We were asked to express how a person is a gift to the Church. Some replied, through their music and choir, the U.C.W., The Men's Group, Garden, Flower contributions, act- ing on committees and devotions to the Church. Len Sommerville sang a beautiful solo, "How Great T", accompanied by the organist, Muriel Jebson. During the chil- dren's time, Reverend Carson talked about "The Grinch Who Tried to Steal Christmas" by stealing the food, gifts and deco- rations, but he didn't suc- ceed, the spirit of Christmas had not stopped. Donna Kent read the scripture from [ Corinthians XII, vs. 12- 31. The beautiful flowers in the Chancel were in memory of Marlene Desautels. Following the service, the annual Congregation Meeting was held. The Official Board will meet this Wed., Jan. 28 at 8 p.m. at the Seagrave Church. The U.C.W. will meet at the home of Jessie and Fred Nobbs on Wed., Feb. 4 at 1:30 p.m. Please call Diane Cooke at 985-3722 with your news items next week.
