Lo" "A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 27, 1998 - 11 Liberal chief visits high school By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Ontario Liberal Leader Dalton McGuinty fielded a wide range of questions from students during a stop at Port Perry High School last week. Mr. McGuinty addressed a crowd of closé to 100 OAC students Tuesday, describing his role as the leader of the opposition, and offering his opinions on a range of issues. "I know people don't hold politicians in a very high regard; that they don't think we listen to them but we do," the former criminal lawyer said. "The system does work and there are good people on all sides of the house. There are good NDPs, good Conservatives, but most of the good ones are Liberals." He said his party's job is to watch over what Premier Mike Harris and his Tory government are doing, and offer criticisms when they have the opportunity. "Some ideas are good, some are not so good. None are ever perfect," said Mr. McGuinty. "I point out the imperfections in their bills; if 98 per cent of the people say the law is good and 2 per cent are hurt by it or think it's bad, then I will make sure those people are heard." Mr. McGuinty fielded a number of questions from the floor, and offered his opinion on how much stock ought to be placed in campaign pledges: "If a promise sounds too good to be true, it probably is." He also said the federal government should consider decriminalizing posses- sion of marijuana in response to a question. "People receive a criminal record even if they are in possession of marijuana, and that record will stay with them for a long time; it will make it even harder to get a job in an already tough job market," he said. "The feds should look at decriminalizing it, not legalizing it... People shouldn't be saddled with a criminal record for a simple mistake." After the session he said that he enjoys exchanging ideas and opinions with stu- dents because of the candid approach they take to dialogue on issues. "They are a good sounding board," he said. Durham College raises tuition rate by 7.5% i¥ EE -- Attention Advertisers Discover Scugog '98 is coming Don't miss out! Call the Port Perry Star 985-7383 to book your ad space. By Chris Hall Port Perry Star Tuition fees at Durham College will rise for the fifth consecutive year next September. Executive Director Mary-Lynn West-Moynes said last week that tuition fees will be on the rise next year, and possibly in 1999 as well. Tuition at the Oshawa college will increase by a total of 7.5 per cent next year. That translates into $105 hike, raising fees from $1,403 to $1,508. "Up until last year the province pretty much set the tuition levels and, last year, they broadened the guidelines and programs can be much more deregu- lated," she said, pointing out that these changes almost guaranteed a fee hike. The increase. was agreed upon by both the college's board of gover- nors and representatives from the Durham College Students Association. Durham college saw its provincial funding cut by 17 per cent in 1996, the level remained the same this year, said Ms West- Moynes. It'was deemed essential to raise tuition fees to preserve and con- tinue quality program- ming at the college. The increase has been broken down into two parts, she said; the 5 per cent raise will be added on to the operating budget for student applications, while the remaining 2.5 per cent will be used on technology, particularly computers. "Hopefully, this will enhance our e-mail capa- bilities and allow more and more students to work at home," said Ms West- Moynes. "It will also allow the professors access to web- sites and will make it more accessible for anyone who needs to do any work." Ms West-Moynes added that even with the hike, education at Durham "is still a pretty darn reason- able price for getting a col- lege education." At the time of the meet- | ings, both college and stu- dent representatives rec- ommended against deregulating fees. If the scheme were to be adopted in the near future, it could see fees for some programs -- such as Dental Hygiene, where students are practi- nf ol 100 volunteers to canvas their neighborhoods in the Port Perry 'approximately 25 homes. a street near their home and will have the entire month of March to canvass This rewarding project should take no more than three hours.
