"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 20, 1998 - 3 Compton offers package on trial basis Port's television universe expands by 12 channels By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star The television universe is about to expand for cable subscribers in Scugog. Compton Communications, which provides cable service to subscribers in Port Perry and area, announced last week that 12 new channels will be pro- vided on a trial basis here, beginning Feb. 1. The free preview of specialty stations carrying cartoons, science fiction, com- edy and history will continue until May, after which subscribers will have the option to either add them to their cable package or give them up, said Compton general manager Mike Shepley. Such promotions have been held here before; subscribers will be remind- ed through an ad campaign when their time is running out and they must indi- cate a desire to continue with the expanded cable menu, said Mr. Shepley. Customers want more channels He's hopeful the new attractions will be recefved favorably by Compton subscribergffwho in the past have been eager cons rs of new channels. £: Qo : Se3 "Our customers seem to be responsive -- to new channels," he said. "There's competition out there now," he said. "We have a pretty progressive system for a small cable provider. We have a lot of channels." Beginning Feb. 1, cable subscribers Imagination Station; The History Channel; The Comedy Network; The Golf Channel; Speedvision; Home and § Garden Television; CTV News 1; Prime. TV; Treehouse TV; Outdoor Life, and CNBC. Some may need converter Viewers who want to check out the new networks must have televisions with the capability of receiving up to channel 78. People with older televi- sions will have to outfit them with con- verters that can be purchased at most electronics stores. If your television is older and doesn't receive the higher-numbered channels, you've probably already found out when Compton has expanded its menu in the past, said Mr. Shepley: "People would have run into the problem before." The local cable company will be pro- moting the new package during the free preview, offering incentives for subscribers to sign up before the May 1 deadline. But no one will be billed prior to May 1 for the extra channels if they sign up early. 40-50% off 40% off 30% off 25% off Selected discontinued boot styles Selected boot & shoe Styles Aerosoles, Hush Puppy, Naturalizer and more All Womens Sorels OUR WINTER FASHION CLEARANCE SALE CONTINUES IN ALL OUR STORES!
