"A Family Tradition for 132 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, January 20, 1998 - 13 Scugog backs MP's pitch to aid ice storm victims With the help of many residents around the region and the Scugog Chamber of Commerce, Durham MP Alex Shepherd has sent help to the victims of the recent ice storm. After making a few phone calls, Mr. Shepherd managed to round up a total of seven generators and two water pumps, which were transported to the small community of Winchester and its sur- rounding rural areas last Wednesday (Jan. 14). "People from around the region donated their gener- ators to the ice storm vic- tims and thanks to Rick McCoshen and the Scugog Chamber of Commerce we are able to get a trailer to haul them down there," he said yesterday. "The Durham Board of Education gave us two gen- erators and two water pumps and Scugog's Don Frew also gave a large, 20 kilowatt, generator and a smaller one as well." Each generator, he says, can help out seven or eight families and then they are moved around after about three hours, making sure everyone gets a little heat. With total damage now estimated to be more than $1 billion, Mr. Shepherd adds that the federal gov- ernment is expected to up their contributions to more than $300 million. " Win Ig winds.
