"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, December 16, 1997 - 5 Display raises money for Lions, food bank Lights shining brightly again at the Hilton home By Chris Hall Port Perry Star The Hilton residence on Scugog's Line 3 will once again be a hard place to miss this holiday sea- son. For the fifth consecu- tive year, Kay Hilton and her family have turned their home and front yard into a wonderland of Christmas lights and dec- orations. The idea started small, said Mrs. Hilton, but quickly grew when she and daughter Judy found inspiration -- and a whole lot of lights -- while on a catering job. "We started with a few lights about five years ago, but when we were catering at an industrial auction sale we stumbled upon a room full of lots of Christmas stuff," she said. "There were lots of Santas and elves thrown in a corner, sort of disre- garded, and knew we had to have them no matter what the cost." From there the annual tradition of hanging lights and decorating the sprawling property just grew. "From the beginning it sort of snowballed. People liked it and we were afraid to quit," Mrs. Hilton said jokingly. "We just enjoyed doing it so much that we con- tinued doing it, and now we're still at it." The task of erecting seasonal decorations and stringing thousands of lights is not an easy one though, she points out. "It's definitely not a one-person, weekend job. We usually start in October and November when the weather is good. It's better to get ready for Christmas then rather than freeze in late November and December". The Hiltons usually get a helping hand from the local Lions' Club putting up the decorations. The Lions' charities benefit from the display in a big way, as do other local organizations. "Any donations we get go the Lions Club," said Mrs. Hilton. There are also boxes left outside during the evenings for people to drop off food donations. Last year the Hiltons delivered two truckloads of food to Operation Scugog. The winter wonderland is shut down after the new year is rung in, said Mrs. Hilton. "We keep them out until Jan. 6 and then we take them all down... we pack them up and put them away until next year," she said of the dec- orations and nearly 25,000 bulbs. "They sure do come down faster than they go up." To get to the display, take Scugog Line 3 west off of Simcoe St. south of Port Perry. It's a short drive from there, and you can't miss it... really. ee -- JE CHRIS HALL/PORT PERRY STAR LITTLE CAROLERS: Jason Bontje and Mark Meadows, both 4 and Junior Kindergarten students at Immaculate Conception school, were among the little performers at a Christmas pageant last week.
