When told that kids had been seen on the ice near Palmer Park late last week, KFA president Sandy Beaton expressed his dis- may. "We have to keep kids off the ice because it's not safe just yet," he said Friday. "To even start to think about Lake Scugog being safe we'd have to have at least several days of sub- zero weather and we haven't had that yet." The weekend saw snow- mobile riders attracted to the ice as well. It's also important to remember that the lake bottom retains heat; so even when it's cold out, there is still warmth under the lake, he said: "When we have marginally cold days -- like the ones we have been hav- ing recently -- the heat source is taking away what cold we have." Even when deep winter conditions have arrived, Mr. Beaton says there are dangerous spots on the ice. "Lake Scugog is unique because we have warm water springs... People like fishermen and snowmobil- ers have to be cautious because warm spots auto- matically mean soft spots on the ice." And while the average depth of the lake is eight feet -- and is known to be as much as 23 feet deep in the Caesarea area -- no mat- ter where you fall in, you're in trouble. "It'll be cold. It'll be hard to get out. When you're a kid and you are four-foot- one and you fall through you'll be in trouble... once the water's over your nose it doesn't make a difference how deep it is. "Every year we get the stupids who press the limits and they go on too early or come off too late. People Just have to use their heads and play it safe." When asked for any tips, Mr. Beaton just said com- mon sense and caution are the best approaches. "Personally I won't go out until there is four-feet of clear, blue ice and I cer- tainly wouldn't take a vehi- cle out there until after that." Stolen lumber trucks recovered Two trucks stolen from a Port Perry lumber store were recovered last week near Newmarket, say Durham Regional Police. The two trucks, a five tonne and one tonne, were stolen overnight from the yard at Cashway Lumber on Hwy. 7A in Port Perry, police said. Thieves using bolts cut- ters entered the property and then drove off with the trucks, worth a total of $16,000, and more than 600 sheets of plywood val- ued at $11,000. Police say the vehicles were discovered around 3 p.m. last Sunday (Dec. 7) just off Davis Dr. in Newmarket. York Regional Police relayed news of the discovery to Durham police. The plywood had been removed from the trucks, police said.
