Fax The Star 985-3708 Port Perry dropped 6-1 by tough Oshawa squad Techstar Bantams bounced from tournament by Oshawa Pharmacy On Dec. 6 the Port Perry Bantams travelled to the North Oshawa Arena to play Oshawa's Eastview Pharmacy team. Oshawa snapped two quick goals in five minutes into the Port Fay net to open things up. But wit three minutes to go in the first, Bill Carr scored the first Port Perry goal with an assist going to Jack Frost and Matt Smart. Throughout the next two periods Rort was having a hard time fend- ing off the Oshawa offence even with Port's strong defensive effort. (Joel Thomson, Mike Wadsworth, Mike Blakey and Jeff Kane). Oshawa managed to score four '| more goals. This made the final score 6-1 for Oshawa. Two days later the Techstar Plastics Bantams were at home and ready to face off against a fast team from Orono. Port was a little slow getting started, but after Orono scored three goals in the first and second periods, Port awoke and exploded from the drop of the puck at the beginning of the third period. But, the fact that Port had a total of 16 minutes in penalties was one of the reasons why the Bantams didn't make a comeback. With 1:52 left in the game, Tyler . Houthuys received the puck from Rob Taylor, who got the pass from Joe Schembri, and shot the puck which ended up in the back of the Orono net. Orono scored one more near the end giving Port a 5-1 loss. Good effort by Joey Schembri, Joel Thomson, Dane Gray, Mike Wadsworth, Jack Frost and Darren Royle. Port's Techstar Bantam No. two team then travelled to Uxbridge to faceoff against the Uxbridge Stars Bantam Major team. Uxbridge opened the scoring with a goal five minutes into the game. Two minutes later Port stormed back with a beautiful goal by Bill Carr with the assist going to Jason Frost. The game remained tied until the second period rolled around when Uxbridge scored on a goal from the point. With the score 2-1 for Uxbridge, Port Perry played hard despite all the penalties. With five minutes left in the second period, Ryan Woods, who was solid between the pipes, was taken out by an Uxbridge player. That player received a five minute cross-checking penalty, but Ryan was hurt and forced to leave the ice and take a rest on the bench. Backup goalie Trevor Doan was ut in and shortly after Mike Wadsworth found himself dropping the gloves and winning a fight. He was lost for the game. In the third, Port came out of the dressing room flying as they found themselves still down by one. They didn't give up there and Mike Blakey made an awesome pass to a breaking Matt Smart who shelved one upstairs, to tie the game at two. Port continued to pressure when a pass to Joel Thomson from Joey Schembri, almost went in but Tyler Houthuys was there to bang in the rebound to make the score 3-2. With four minutes left in the game Uxbridge put their third goal on the scoreboard making the score 3-3. As soon as their goal was scored the buzzer went and the game ended up tied at 3-3 with a curfew of 4:08 on the clock. It's just luck that Port didn't capitalize on the powerplay as Uxbridge had 64 min- utes in penalties. A good comeback effort by Port Perry. LAE Oshawa === ~ Oshawa 5 \, RETA 2 The Regional Municipality of Durham Works Department DURHAM al A&1[0])'] 1998 BLUE BOX COLLECTION SCHEDULE FOR THE TOWNSHIP OF SCUGOG The collection of Blue Box materials in the Township of Scugog will be changing from in January 1998. This change is part of a program to make recycling collection more efficient in Durham Region. The last collection in 1997 will be during the week of December 29th and the first collection in 1998 will be during the week of January 19th. Regular collection every second week resumes from the week of January 19th. V.A. SILGAILIS, P.ENG. COMMISSIONER OF WORKS did the rest of the scoring for the Modacks. Drummond played his first games for the ModJacks over the week- end. He was with a Cobourg Tier Two team for much of this season. He's described as a skilled player who knows how to put the puck away. In Sunday's game, he scored a beauty from the slot on a snapshot that was in the net before the goalie could make a move. SLAPSHOTS: The Black Hawks brought a record of 8-15-1 into Sunday's game and are in last place in the eastern League. They were playing their third game in as many nights after wins Friday over Bobcaygeon and Saturday over a powerful Picton squad. Hawk co-coaches Dan Likopulos and Percy Harding said there was no excuse for the effort 4 Port hosts Lakefield Sunday their team turned in. Both praised the ModJacks for a superior work ethic that night, say- ing the green and white used a strong fore-check to great advantage. "Give Port Perry a lot of credit, they never stopped skating out there," sald Harding after the game as he faced a long bus ride home. The MoJacks have a couple of games on tap this coming weekend as they travel to Bobcaygeon Friday night to face the Bullets -- one of the teams they have to catch to make the playoffs. And on Sunday night at the Scugog Arena, they'll host the Lakefield Chiefs. Last time the Chiefs were in town, they pinned an 11-3 defeat on the ModJacks, so no doubt the green and white will be looking to make amends for that outing. Faceoff is at 7 p.m. Merchants on top The Little Britain Merchants continued their domination of the Central Junior C circuit last weekend by picking up five of six possible points. After losing 4-3 in overtime against Uxbridge Friday the Merchants rebounded back to beat Port Perry 6-5 on Saturday. The next night they rolled over the Geor ina [ce 65-2 to increase their season point total to a leaguo-high 33.
