PORT PERRY STAR - Wednesday, August 6, 1997 - 5 "A Family Tradition for 131 Years" Canadian Foodgrains Bank effort's on again Local corn crop will aid Koreans By Jeff Mitchell Port Perry Star Farmers in Scugog are doing their part this sum- mer to help combat hunger on the other side of the globe. Once again this year, members of the United Church congregation in Epsom and Utica have planted 35 acres of corn, their contribution to the Canadian Foodgrains Bank project. When it's harvested in the fall, their grain will either be shipped overseas, or sold and the proceeds used to feed the world's hungry. Of particular urgency right now is the famine in North Korea. The Foodgrains Bank head office in Winnipeg announced last week that it will commit an addition- al $500,000 to its original pledge to help address a dire food shortage in that country. "Terrific need" cited Don Asling, the Epsom farmer who has been involved with the Foodgrains Bank for 12 years and helpea get the local project started, said it's heartening to know the North Koreans will be helped. "There is a terrific need in Korea at the present time," he said. Mr. Asling said the Epsom crop was one of 103 in Ontario last year -- farmers in Blackstock also grew a crop for the Bank -- - and contributed to an organization which annu- ally helps feed people in countries around the globe. All the seed, labor Fund for Mcintyres is set up Family and friends of a Scugog township resident tragically killed in Toronto last week are asking the com- munity for support. An account has been set up at the local CIBC bank where funds can be dropped off to help the family of Scugog Island's Joe McIntyre. Neighbors, friends, and family of Mr. McIntyre have joined together in an effort to raise funds for his 39-year- old wife Debbie, and sons Michael, 11, and David, 7. The two children are being cared for by neighbors. Both Mr. McIntyre, also 39, and his wife were struck by a car that crossed three lanes of traffic.and shot up an embankment on the northbound Don Valley Parkway around 4 a.m. on July 217. The GM employee was standing beside his motorcycle, under a bridge, while waiting out a rainstorm when the accident occurred. Mrs. Mcln had both her legs crushed in the accident and had | undergone several hours of major orthopedic surgery. She is still recover- ing in hospital. Anyone who wishes to make a dona- tion to the McIntyre family is asked to make cheques payable to Debbie McIntyre and drop them off at the Port Perry CIBC branch. [J Applications are now being received at the Scugog Memorial Library for THE KENT FARNDALE ART BURSARY Open to any resident of Scugog wishing assistance in pursuing a specific field of art. ti i t Please return completed application forms to the Library by September 15, 1997. for planting and harvest- ing and treatment of the grain after harvest is donated by local farmers and businesses. The grain then goes to the Foodgrains Bank, which either ships it or sells it here, earmarking the proceeds for its work abroad. May help buy rice "Some of the grain grown (in Canada) will be sold to buy grain in other parts of the world, such as rice, which we can't grow here," said Mr. Asling. He said that during the years he's been involved with the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, he's been impressed with the organization's effective- ness and dedication to accomplishing its goal of feeding the hungry. "The thing that's always amazed me is that the administration" (cost) is less than 3 per cent," said Mr. Asling. "As well, we have peo- ple overseas to make sure it (aid) gets to where it's going." One concern with the local crop has been the summer's exceedingly dry weather, Mr. Asling noted. - ab a f= +» ALBANS HOME IMPROVEMENT CENTRE KITCHEN & BATH » WINDOWS & DOORS ® Flooring * Vacuum Systems * Siding - Vinyl, Aluminum & Steel » e Garage Doors Mouldings * Plumbing Fixtures e FINE JEWELLERY DESIGN * Expert Jewellery Repairs * Custom Design ~ Goldsmith on Premises ~ REPAIR TT * Exquisite Gold, Silver & Diamond Jewellery * Expert Watch & Clock Repairs Two-tone Jewellery... in SILVER & GOLD!
