GM announced Monday morning that an agreement between the United Auto Workers Union and General Motors had been ratified, and that workers would return to work at the Michigan plant, which supplies transmissions to both Oshawa assembly plants. As a result of the strike at a Warren, Michigan parts plant, close to 5,600 Sployees at the Oshawa car plants were sent home. The Michigan power train plant's shutdown closed both plants in Oshawa last Friday. "The strike by employ- ees in Michigan has affected us to the extent that both shifts -- day and night -- at both car plants have been cancelled. The two Oshawa car plants are essentially closed," said Chick McGregor last Friday. - General Motors car assembly plants do not stockpile auto parts and only keep enough on hand for a small amount of time, he said. Employees at the Michigan plant went on strike in the middle of last week. "They are having staffing problems down there. The company wants to reorganize the workforce, and the union doesn't agree," said Mr. McGregor. He added that the local workers took the down- time in stride. "This is just a work stoppage for us and we go through these for dif- ferent reasons; we can shut down the plant if there's too much snow.' While employees at the car plants were sent home, workers at the Oshawa truck lant con- tinued to work around the clock, said Mr. McGregor. The truck assembly plant was not affected by the strike. without a lot of driving right here at "HOMESTEAD FURNITURE » APPLIANCES TV & VCR bya Cameo QR) 45] BY) | UNITED || ves fz Jf | CARPET® || BLINDS Se a RR ER ISSN NST © COME IT] NYT) JOIN US FOR THE BEST AIL AM pL ON TEN YI ae ul o_o pp SO "re J air a
