The result wil be a thorough 'Galberg, along with local students, has Bright future for the lake I's no coincidence that environmental stories are front and centre during the warm months. The sun is high, the climate is kind, and our primary natural resource -- Lake Scugog and its surrounding watercourses -- are being used to their fullest. It's at this time that those who use the lake are able to take stock, and gauge its health, relative to other years. Anglers can judge by the bites they get, and where; boaters are aware of water quality and clarity; and the rest of us can take note, too. This summer one group is going beyond those cursory examinations. The Kawartha Fisheries Association's Scugog branch has launched an intensive study, now near inventory of the lakeshore, including a com plete listing of the flora and fauna occurring in any give location. Also taken into account are the structures along the shoreline. Naturalist Cathy introduced the Galerucella beetle, a particularly single-minded little beast: It feeds on purple loosestrife, and nothing but. The project is generating enthusiasm across the province as the effectiveness of the beetle as a means of combating the invasion of the loosestrife plant becomes more apparent.
