"A Family Tradition for 131 Years" PORT PERRY STAR - Tuesday, July 29, 1997 -31 A es nh --- R URAL Roots Fair board holds August meeting this Wednesday Recently Robert and Steven Larmer along with a friend Brian Chartrand returned home after spending a vacation visiting their grandmother Mrs. Schaad at Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia. What an experience for three young lads touring all of the sights of the area. : Several cattle farmers from this area travelled to Western Ontario a week ago Tuesday to tour various farms. These past few weeks the promised rains which are so badly needed here manage to travel to other areas and miss us each time. We do hope that it soon is our turn to receive some rain. This Wednesday evening is the August Fair Board meeting. With the fair coming up on Aug." - 23 it is important to have a large number 'of directors 'in attendance to finalize many plans.' Please note that the -meeting is one week earlier 'than is usual. The fair books are now. available from secretary Janice Beechey at her home at 92 Greensboro. On Saturday afternoon Cecil and Marie Gibson, Terry and 'Kelly Gatchell attended the wedding of Terry Tripp and 'Michelle Turner which was held at Port Perry United Church! The Durham Highland Games which took place over - the weekend at Port Perry and Uxbridge beginning with a very spectacular Tattoo on Friday evening attracted many of our = local residents. Another event that was of interest to many in our area 'was the open house featuring the roses and clematis show at the home of Frank and Donna Barkey south of Blackstock. Those beautiful gardens go to show that dairy farmers have other interests than just their COWS. There were 14 tables at the Tuesday evening regular euchre party with the following win- day. On Thursday, July 24, a large congregation of family and friends from the community gathered at St. John's to cele- brate the life, and mourn the passing of Walter (Bill) Willis, husband of Helen Willis, who departed this life on July 20. Even though Walter had Jived in this community for a scant five years, the large number of Scugog residents who attended the funeral bere ample witness to his impact on this communi- ty. Our love and prayers go out to Helen, their son Richard, daughter-in -law Jean, and to 'the grandchildren. 'Then, on July 24, a well loved, long time member of St. John's congregation, Ivy Rahm, passed away Ivy, who was for many years the organist at St. John's had been living, for the past 10 years in Victoria B.C. For most of those years, Ivy had lived in her own apartment not far from the B.C. Parliament Buildings in Victoria. : Those of us-who had the good fortune to visit with her in Victoria, found that she was still the bubbly, feisty lady of yesteryear...sure she was look- ing a little frail, but she didn't act that way. It was known that Ivy was ailing and the prognosis ° was not great but it was still a shock to hear of her passing. All at St: John's pray for the repose of her soul and send love and condolences to her daughters, Doris Hamilton in Victoria, B.C. and Ruth Williamson in Parksville, B.C. After those farewells, it was with joy that we welcomed Brittney Elizabeth Banton to membership in the church. On Sunday, July 27 Father Hugh baptized Brittney before a large gathering of family: members and friends and members of the St. John's Brittney, who is the daughter of Stephen David and Tamara Lynn Banton and great-grand- daughter of Ned and Joyce Banton, seemed to enjoy the rite as she beamed at everybody * throughout the ceremony. congregation.
